@ Kev, that extra thin cement is absolutely brilliant, and made all the easier to use because of the very fine brush in the cap. I shall be using that a lot more now. thanks again

Not sure if you've heard of these, but there are things called 'Riffler' files that will help you in filing those very small vents once you have drilled them and before using the Tamiya 'Extra Thin'? You can see them here:

Can't say I've seen those before Kev, but they look as though they could work well in an awkward spot, and I'm always open to try something new. Think I'll get myself a set of those. Thanks

I wouldn't say that but it is an improvement and when I get my new Micro Mesh, I can give it a better smooth off and it will be ready for the primer. It actually looks better than those pictures show because that 'macro' lens on the camera shows up every imperfection, and as luck would have it, the repair will be on the opposite side to the display side with the 'cutaways' so it won't be visible anyway.

BUILD UPDATE #33
Hello friends,
This time we're making a start on the framework for the deck.
To begin, we'll use the parts I've already received which are:
Issue #14, parts #78 & #79
Issue #15, parts #80 & #81
Issue #16, parts #82 & #83
These being the transverse ribs which fit along the hull in the appropriate slots and sit on the previously planked section of the upper hull. They are not glued in place.
A little filing out of the slots was needed to get them to sit correctly so that they lift in and out with ease.
The parts supplied in issue #33 are the longitudinal vertical frames which run under the deck area to the left and right-hand sides of the main keel.
After removing them from the sheet and giving them a light sanding to remove any rough edges, they were glued into the slots on parts #78 throu #83 using a cocktail stick to apply the glue in the slots, and left to dry in situ.

Nice job david, that repair job on the vents looks great and as you say due to its position will not really be visible on the finished model.

Thanks for the nice comments guys,
I'm really pleased with how she's coming along now. There are a couple of issues not directly associated with building the model.
One is that I really must have a go at tidying up my worktop, the photos in the diary have really emphasized how untidy it is and there are bits and pieces everywhere.
The second is that the model has got to a stage where I cannot use my jig any more, but fortunately, fitting the plastic cladding at the stern (the bit with all the ballasting vents drilled out) has strengthened up that part of the keel and has seemingly straightened out the small bend in that area which is one reason why I built the jig in the first place.
I am also considering the option of running some LED lighting into the hull before I get too much further into the build, so that the cutaways can be illuminated. My initial thoughts are 2 warm white, and 1 red led (switched separately)in each compartment, controlled from a 9 volt battery and switch outside the model.
Another thing I still have outstanding is the purchase of the rest of the parts for the torpedo room conversion. So far, I only have the rear bulkhead, the floor and the side walls, so I still have the torpedo tubes, ceiling assembly, a couple of torpedoes and some P/E hand wheels to get. Only buying 1 part each month is the most I can do, so the planking of the front end might take a while longer to complete than I at first thought.
Any thoughts and feedback would as usual be welcome and appreciated.

Well done David, certainly moving on apace now and looking good.
Maybe you should build a little 1:48 scale 'Enigma' coding machine to put in the cutaway section?

BUILD UPDATE #34
Hello again,
This week it's the turn of the longitudinal horizontal framework which forms part of the removable section of the deck.
Issue #34 contained a sheet with 4 of these frames and 4 small reinforcing parts.
After removing from the sheet and cleaning up any rough edges, they were placed end to end and checked for correct alignment, then test fitted in to the slots on the previously assembled vertical framework.
With everything lining up OK, and using a cocktail stick to apply the adhesive to the parts, they were fitted into place and left to dry.
Next, the small reinforcing parts were test fitted in their appropriate slots, and with all fitting with no additional sanding, they were glued into place, again using a cocktail stick to get into the small slots.
So that's 2/3 of the deck framework completed, last last 1/3 to be fitted in the next update.

BUILD UPDATE #35
Hi guys,
This time, the removable deck framework is finished off and painted.
Issue #35 came with 1 sheet containing the last 2 horizontal longitudinal beams and 16 small reinforcing parts to finish the last 1/3 of the framework.
As with the last update, after the parts were removed from the sheet and cleaned up, the large horizontal beams were dry fitted and with no adjustment necessary, they were glued into position using a cocktail stick to apply the adhesive to the slots. Some glue was also added to each end to marry up securely with the previous beam and the end of the framework.
After leaving in situ to dry, the 16 small reinforcing parts were added after carefully noting their relevant positions as each part was a slightly different shape to allow for the contours of the plastic hull cladding which will be fitted at a later stage. Again, I used a cocktail stick to apply the adhesive to the parts.
After the work was completely dry, the section was removed from the main part of the build and given a coat of Humbrol #33 acrylic matt black. Unfortunately, my airbrush decided to stop working on me half way through, so I had to finish the work off with a good old fashioned paint brush.
Like Graeme (aka Pemberg), I am considering running in some FOC's to light up the interior of the cutaway sections, but this job will have to done before I get into cladding the build with the wooden strips which we'll receive over the next 7 or 8 weeks.
