Frist post and hello to the group. Working on my 3rd wooden boat Artesanía Latina Providence Whaleboat from the story Moby D¡ck. Scale 1:25 My first two were produced by Midwest Products, but I wanted to get into planking and shaping the wood. I have made many mistakes; partly mine own, partly not having ship plans, and partly the instructions are something to get use to (after have worked the Midwest Products instructions which are really nice for beginners.) The best part about my mistakes are that it is all wood and fun to fix and problem solve. Learning a ton for my next model, pit fall and such. So Artesania Latina Providence Whaleboat is my 2nd boat/model I have ever made. I have made some mistakes along the way, but totally enjoyed the work to correct it. I wanted to share some of my mistakes with the crew along with what I have done to make the work efficient. First off the bucket. I wanted it a bit rustic, but when I put in the rope I did not do a tight roll and it just didn't look good. If I had to do it over again I would have stained or painted the bottom to create more depth. (Photo 1&2) What I did instead was to add more rope to the bucket, but before I did I added stain and than a better roll. Now I am happy with the bucket. (photo 4) Photo 3 show how I filed down the edge of the wire to lay flat when wrapped around the bucket. When I got to the oars the instructions gave a example of hand filing 1mm off the dowel to make a handle. Five oars means 5 x the work. There has to be a better way. Dreamel + Jig = Fun/better way! Build and Jig and the fun will come. So here are some pics of the jig with Dreamel. Also you will see I had to sand all 6 dowel to attach the fin of the oar on the end of the dowel. Line up, clamp, and sand, fit, sand, fit, and boom it fits. Wood putty it, sand it into shape and seal it. It really turns out great. Thanks for looking. On the road to finishing the model. I found some old weathered wood that I cut down to be my base for the boat. Here are my final picture for the Artesanía Latina Providence Whaleboat. I really enjoyed this model and would recommend it. I have ordered the HMS Victory and can't wait to get started. All my best to the crew and happy boating.
