BigGrin Hi Dominick

Looks like your last but one post was overlooked so here goes my pennyworth

At the bow any doublers should be faired in profile with the other formers in this area use a plank to check that it follows the curve here and that it makes maximum contact with each hull former. When a doubler is at the bottom of the false keel this should be shaped to match the profile of the hull, do not sand the false keel round.

At the stern you are correct the formers and doublers are sanded down to the false keel. the only part of the false keel that is sanded is the very stern part which needs to be taken down to the specified thickness in the instructions and reference the official build here also. Also check that part 33 is fully seated in its slot as its easy to not do this and it will save a lot of hastle later in the build if it needs to be rectified. About 60% of former 34 will be sanded away to get the correct profile here.

Any decks that are proud of the frames should be sanded back to the frames if the decks are inside the frames by a couple of mm then thats fine.

Link to official build, go to post #7

Hope this helps

Andy and Alan,

Thanks for the replies and advice.

It was a busy day of sanding today. Thank God for my Black & Decker palm sander; it made quick work of the transom which was the biggest sanding job.

Here are some pictures and a few questions.

At the bow (see the two bow shots) the planks have a really nice curve and appear the right shape but stand slightly off of the forward former. Should I build up this former or have I got the shape a bit wrong and should I sand down bow formers 11A more? Right now the curve is very round.

At the stern, the transom is nice and even with the stem of the keel. Should the edges of the transom be completely rounded or is the little bit of step on the edges acceptable?

A few of the arms of the frames seem to have a little more spread than others and I'll need to sand them down. I imagine that later I will have to slightly build up the frames inside the bulwarks.

A very few of the frames were a bit shy and I built them up slightly and will sand them back down. These same ones look klike they will need to be taken down slightly inside the bulwarks.

As usual gents your advice is always appreciated.

Oh, and I'm not sure if you celebrate Father's Day in the U.K. (we celebrate it in the states tomorrow) but if you do, then a Happy Father's Day to all.

Hi Dominick,

Unfortunately I am no expert with these plank on frame ships, infact I am only just starting my first ever one. After looking at your pictures though to me it looks like those two formers in picture 2 over been faired a little to much, the way I understand it is that the planks should be sitting flush to the whole former.

Im sure someone with a bit ore knoweledge than me on this will be along soon.

In the meantime happy Fathers day for tomorrow, yes it is fathers day here in the uk too, actually its now as it is now 0030 here BigGrin

Dave,

Thanks for the quick response and Happy Father's Day to you, father or not.

It actually sits perfectly against the two formers in the second picture. My concern is with the main frame to which those formers attach (shown rather poorly in the first pic I'm afraid). It misses that by about 2-3mm.

BigGrin Hi Dominick

Happy Fathers Day to you aswel M8.

You have done a great job on the fairing overall although as you point out a little too much may have been taken off the former at the bow its an easy mistake to make as fairing is an art in itself. I think it should be ok as it is here.
The transom will need to be taken back a bit more if you compare yours as it is now with the pictures on the official build you will see whats needed here.

I would not worry too much about the frame arms right now as they will be pulled into there correct position as the planking and decks are added.

Regards

Andy,

Thanks M8.

I sanded the stern a bit more. I think it looks a lot like the pictures in the build log.

What do the more experienced members think? Did I get it right? I plan to plank the underside of the transom this week to complete month 2. Perfect timing since I got an email letting me know that month 3 shipped today. BigGrin

Alan, Martyn, and Ian,

Thanks gents. I will start planking the underside of the gallery this evening and should have month 3 (issues 21 - 30) by Friday. I estimate I will be starting to plank the upper hull by this weekend.

Finished planking the underside of the transom supports. The last plank was pretty narrow but closed it up fairly nice.

And, month 3 arrived yesterday so planking the hull starts tomorrow

Neat work as ever Dominick.

You may find this calculator useful as well, when you get to the last 10 planks.

Thanks Gents,

As always your encouragement is greatly appreciated.

A few posts with photos to follow. Sorry, it will be one post per photo as I'm working off of the iPad and I can't get it to correctly upload multiple photos to a single post.

Gallery support planking trimmed. I sanded it back a touch too much near the transom but added a small shim to correct it. The starboard side came out correct - live and learn.

Here's the first of the planks applied. Exciting stuff - well, for me anyway. It was a little tricky to line it up flush with the bottom of the gun deck and then pin it. A third hand would have helped immensely. In retrospect I should have clamped a few scraps to the bottom of the lower gun deck to act as a guide rather than using the "run a finger over it test". All in all it came out fine though.

The clamps and plank scraps are to make sure the planks line up perfectly at their joins so the next course lays in perfectly.

And here she is with the bow plank installed. This picture just shows the one but the first plank is completed on both sides of the ship all the way to the bow.

In looking at the official build log, it looks like Tom's planks leave a little less space at the bow. I'll correct that with future courses. I figure it won't be a problem if I have to fill a little at the front of one plank.

Rows 2 & 3 coming tomorrow.
