Best of luck with the painting. Brush or Airbrush ???!!!

Some parts I think can only be brush painted so its paint, wait for it to dry and paint again

The internals of the cab are many and it seem a shame that once the windows and roof have been added you will not be able to see them all (and our hard work and skill in the construction !!) so I think I will modify the roof so that it can be removed easily to display what is inside

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

I will be rattle can some of it, airbrushing some of it and hand painting some of it GIl.The only problem you will have if you want to remove the roof is the pipes coming out of the steam dome enter through the roof so you would have to either reroute them through the front of the cab or make the pipes removeable too.

IT was the same with the D51 train.I spent about 10 hours painting all the detail and most of it cant be seen on the final model. But I know its there!!

I just found out I have abstestos in my basement which is where my spray booth is and it is going to cost at least $15,000 to remove so it may be a while before I can start painting.

Yes it is the bad one unfortunately. My house was built in 1923 and it has steam heat and all of the steam pipes are wrapped with asbestos.THey have to seal the basement and remove it and we have to have a third party monitoring and air exchange company to over see the removal and since this is in New York you need all kinds of permits that cost about $2000.Oh joy.
When we bought the house we were told to leave it since it was worse to disturb it.Unfortunately we have had several severe thunderstorms with several inches of rain each time and my basement flooded and it soaked some of the asbestos and it is now crumbling.

Looks like a busy weekend (or two)

Just keep the coffee pot full

As you know I have been painting as I go along with my build. Some of the parts are small and if not stuck down tend to leave the spraying area if not secured.
Double sided tape is handy

painting painting painting. While we are waiting for the paint to dry lets focus on a couple of other things.

I am adding a boxcar and caboose to the train and it will be displayed on a trestles bridge.

So finding a boxcar kit from the 1860s proved to be just as tough as finding a caboose. My good friend and fellow Jupiter builder Gil told me that OCCRE just released a boxcar. So I placed an order from Spain and a week later it showed up on my doorstep.

As you can see in the picture this is a pretty nice 1920s 4 wheel boxcar.
In 1860s boxcars were generally 4 wheel and fairly small since the engines were not very powerful and in fact if they were pulling more than a handful of boxcars usually there were 2 engines used, especially if there was an incline involved in the route.

Since making the wheel bogeys is the hardest part I figured this kit would work for.I just have to rebuild the top of the boxcar to match 1860s construction. THis means not using a lot of the metal framing and getting rid of the buffers. It also means using different wood patterns.

Paint is still drying and I ran out of blue for the cab and tender so y mind wandered to another subject -coupling. Now gentlemen take your minds out of the gutters.I am talking about coupling between the tender and the boxcar and the boxcar and the caboose.

The linkage in the OCCRE Jupiter kit is not very accurate. The linkage in the OCCRE boxcar kit is also not accurate for the time period.
What I need is a link and pin coupler.I found someone on ebay selling a G scale link and pin coupler set for $6 so I bought it .I think it will probably be too big ,but it will at least give me something to use to design a scratchbuilt one.

This type of linkage was commonly used in the 1860s.it was an extremely dangerous job to connect train wagons and it was very common for the switchmen that did this to have several missing fingers.

Here is a video I found showing how dangerous it was to connect trains and it also shows the improvement with the automatic coupler.

Here is a picture of the cast coupler that I bought.

Morning Carl

are you going to be modifying the caboose from any drawings/pictures you have found. If so what was your source. As you know I am considering the same "addon" to my build. Any info would be appreciated

yes Gil,
I found a website that offers plans for g scale caboose.I decided not to buy them because I wound have to scale them down to 1/32 scale. And I am cheap.

So I figured I would use the pictures on the website below as a guide only.I have a cheap Bachmann G scale plastic caboose (I took a picture of it earlier on).I plan on using the bogeys from this, but cutting the base and making it shorter and then scratchbuilding the body of the caboose using the website as a guide.

Here is the link to the 1860s style 4 wheel caboose

http://www.gouldstudios.com/loco_caboose41.html

I can get you the information on the caboose I bought if you need it.

Thanks Andy,
I don't want to get too crazy with obsessing over every detail and I didn't want to scratchbuild the bogeys so I figured I could make this work and make a reasonable facsimile. The train itself is pretty small and would look a bit lost on a trestle without at least a wagon and/or caboose.

So as I am watching the paint dry and recovering from the really funny smell of the Mr Color paint lets look at the progress on the boxcar.

So I found a reference photo of a typical 1860s boxcar and I decided to modify the OCCRE wagon to look like this car.

I started by measuring the size of the windows and vents on the photo and drawing out the design on paper.I then used a pounce wheel to transfer the outlines of the windows onto the plywood frame of the boxcar.

Now that I had the outlines of the doors and vents on the wagon sides I used a drill to do a rough cut of the openings.I then cleaned up the openings with a file and installed a frame.I put the floor in place inside the wagon and stained it.I then applied sheets of siding with 2.5 mm vertical spacing lines on it to give the appearance of wood planks.

In the final picture I am installing the axles and brake supports and test fitting the roof beams.I will paint the interior of the wagon before installing the roof.
