A small update on progress and to seek some advice and opinions from others. First of all I finished another crate with another one now in the vice drying before its shaped. I also finished the 3 layers of danish oil to the middle deck and applied a layer of varnish. I ended up using the varnish that Trudi (SWMBO) got to varnish the kitchen window sill. I have now also stanied some bits of wood to try and decide what colour to stain the gun whales when I get to them. This is what I need a second opinion on I am liking the Indian Rosewood and the Teak, but I do not know which one would be more of a realistic wood used in the period With flash, I also stained some planks to compare the look Without flash This is the Varnish that I used, I am really happy with the finish on the deck, however I do not think it is completely Matt, it looks like it still has a sheen, will see how it looks tomorrow after all night to dry. I am umming and arrghing if I want a slight seen on the crates or completely matt. This is how the decks look after the oil and varnish, very nice I think

Dave, What a great job you are doing with your build, regarding what stain to use for me I think rosewood, don't forget that it will lighten over a time depending on where you display your build,Just a thought. Regards Trev. Work in progress: Tombstone (Scratch) - San Francisco 2. -The Mayflower ( scratch by plan).

Looks great Dave, as for the stains teak would be appropriate as she was built in Havana Cuba so hardwoods such as teak would have been used in her construction. Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Thanks Trev & Andy. I must admit I was leaning towards teak, I still have a bit of time before I need to stain so could still change my mind

Thanks for popping in and the comments nightwisher, I will give it another couple of coats. It does say to lightly sand before the final coat, is this something you do when using it?

Yes mate after the second coat is fully dry (about 6 hours) I give it a light sand with a very fine grade sandpaper, dust off and give it a final coat. Thanks Nightwisher Well just the one picture today, have finished the fist set of grates and applied the first coat of varnish, also started with the second set of grates. In other work I have applied the second coat of varnish to the deck tonight too, once dry this will be lightly sanded ready for the last coat. There will be very few updates to this now until I get anything meaningful done. My modelling time is soon going to be very limited and will have to grab time when I can as at work we will shortly be delivering a large 1:1 railway diorama build . This will be one of the largest projects carried on on the Great Western route in decades, this is all due to kick off over the summer holidays lasting 6 weeks so things will be manic Anyway enough waffling heres the picture

Thank you Andy , Steve and Martyn After using a fine sand paper and gently sanding down the two coats of varnish a third coat was applied. As this has now dried I continued to add the deck supports for the next deck as well as the deck itself. I have also finished the first 3 grates, 3 coats of varnish also added to them, as well as made more progress on the rest of the grates, will post pictures of them when they are finished. This is where I am at now. I will plank the top deck in one go

Thanks Mick A little more progress has been made. All the main deck panels have now been glued in place, weighted down or clamped while the glue dried. I finished making up the rest of the grates and think they came out quite nice, a lot of time was spent on these The top too in the picture are completely finished now with 3 coats of Ronseal toughcoat. All the others now have the first coat of varnish applied. The very observant will notice I had finished 3 in a previous post and not 2 as in this post, if you look back you will see that one of the 3 x 9 grates I made as a 3 x 10 So out with the saw to chop off a one row, resulting in a new end piece being cut and shaped, then revarnished and added to the others awaiting the last two coats. Next I used a long (1m) steel ruler to mark the centre line of the decks to start the planking from and finally the front of the bow planked before starting on the deck, which I am really looking forward to
