Regards delboy271155 (Derek) Hi Derek Thanks for looking in and the kind words... Yes, I think that installing the captive nuts was one of my better decisions early in the build... The stand was a gradual development that came about as the work progressed. I personally would not consider a pivoting / swinging base unless there was a secure means of immobilisation whilst working on the ship... Regards JohnP

Hi Everyone There was no Progress for April and the first couple of weeks of May 2015... However, the last 2 weeks of May were reasonably productive and Progress is reported below; Working through Issues 40, 41, 42 and 43..... - Completed gunwales and gun port linings Port side... - Installed Stern galleries both sides. Had a bit of bother with the little bamboo planks under the gallery window panels, but a little packing here and a little wood filler there had it fixed to satisfaction... - Installed and painted forward bulkhead and Beak support... - Beak platform constructed and dry fitted, together with bowsprit ( which as supplied is warped at different angles in 2 different places) A new piece of 10mm dowel will be needed to replace it... - Beak platform garniture installed - some serious clamping required here to ensure it all stayed stuck where it was supposed to stick!... - The last photo shows my build looking similar to step 22 of issue 43, for which I am quite happy about... Hi Derek, Andy, Alan, Adam and Martyn Thanks to you all for looking in and the nice comments. The black paint doesn't look too flash in the pictures so I've just slapped on another coat... Just working on issue 44 now and found the third deck plates centre sections 85a&b won't fit into the slots. Ribs 16, 20 and 21 seem to be 1.5mm to 2mm too far forward so I'm going to have to make some drastic mods to the slots - no worries, I can fix it...! The forward and aft pairs of deck plates fit perfectly, so I don't know how the problem occurred...  Best regards JohnP

Hi Everyone Below is my progress for June 2015 Working through Issues 44, 45, and 46... Installed false cannon supports with additional buttresses...and 3rd deck support beams... Thought I'd be a Smart Alec and fit the 3rd deck planking before installing the deck plates...  Poor decision that... as I had decided to use 0.5mm black rigging thread for the caulking. I had not considered the difficulties of achieving accurate continuity of the planking across the deck plate joints, nor the tangle created by all the loose ends of the rigging thread... The first deck plate finished up looking like a dog's breakfast... I've included a photo below... So I changed course and installed all the deck plates first - as per procedure - after a lot of messing about putting the first piece right... I'm going to leave the deck without surface treatment as I prefer the scrubbed, bleached look I remember so well from my old seafaring days... For the nailed look I just used a HB pencil using a template I made to get a semblance of uniformity... Then it was time to install the forecastle deck and quarter deck. Once again I buttressed the false cannon supports. The top of the hull strakes under the foredeck were a little too much flared outwards, so with careful use of a long clamp was able to reduce that by 2mm each side. There is still a slight step of about 1mm each side which reduces level at about half way forward... All the mast holes line up nicely... The curved bulkhead strips at the back of the foredeck are 18mm above the deck and not 15mm as specified. I cut the strips at 41mm so the conclusion is, the rear edge of the deck is sitting 3mm too low. Can anyone advise if this will be a problem in future?... The quarterdeck dimension is spot on... I have up to Issue 68 under the bench so plenty of WIP in the offing... Happy building and best regards to All JohnP John Passmore attached the following image(s):

Hello Australia we've actually got some sunshine in England,quick everyone outside before it rains again.Seriously though you're sovereign looks fantastic love the thread caulking, never been brave enough to try it myself. As for your 3mm difference in height you're middle deck doesn't look too low compared to the gunports.I can't really see where it comes from unless the forecastle deck is too high.I do seem to remember one of the uprights that sit behind the curved walls being to short and using an infill,did you force the deck down to meet it maybe? Can see some problems coming up when painting bulkheads, inside bulwarks etc that need to be masked at deck level. Masking tape will pull out caulking if I'm not careful... Regards JohnP

Hi Nightwisher Thanks for looking in and I've figured out how my little problem occurred... I have shaved too much off the top of the bamboo hull planks so the vertical at half way between 2nd & 3rd gunport is too low... I had carefully followed a line from top of rib 2 over tops of ribs 5 & 6 to arrive at that point... Consequently, when the deck was trial fitted there was a small gap along the forward edge... I fixed that by sanding the platform at the top of the forward bulkhead! What I SHOULD have done is add another bamboo hull plank and then trim to compensate... However - all is not lost - I have yet to plank the deck and have a plan of rectification forming - watch this space!... Regards JohnP

Yes the foredeck is sloping a little to steeply as can be seen in the different dimensions between the top of the 1st and 2nd gunports and edge of the deck...it's actually about 2mm. I will not be developing this area until I see what happens in relevant future issues... Regards JohnP
