Somehow that doesn't really surprise me Tom?! I bet the Russians will be pleased to know that the F-35 is a bit naff at close combat - though an enemy getting close is one of the scenarios that the F-35 doesn't need to worry about too much with it's long range early warning and detection capabilities being superior to anything else? I'm sure it will eventually develop into the awesome machine that was originally envisaged and knowing Lockheed Martin (best aircraft manufacturer ever inmho) they'll get it right in the end?

Still love the F-16 though not nearly as cool as an F-18 SuperHornet!! Drool Love Cool

For a 40 year-old design, the F16 still looks cool and it seems to work very well for lots of airforces around the world. Loving the F18 too!

Wonder how it compare's in such a scenario with the Typhoon?

If it could get close enough Tom, I think the 'Tiffie' would run (or fly) circles around the F-35 with it's awesome manoeuvrability and would have no trouble getting inside the turning circle of the F-35? Would love to watch that for sure!!

Nice post!! Cool ThumpUp

The f16 had its share of teething problems too.If the f35 is going to be the last manned fighter it is a shame it does not perform well in close air combat. Maybe part of the problem is the pilots dont take full advantage of its maneuverability?

Here is an interesting blog written in 2012.He may need to update it a bit based on the results of the mock combat
