Andy, Alan, Thanks M8s. Here she is with all of the third, and part of the fourth, course of planks. I've put up a big sign with bold letters on my bench that just says "Chamfer" as I forget until after one edge of the plank is covered in glue. All-in-all looking pretty good for a first planked hull kit. DSoldano attached the following image(s): Dominick

And here's the bow with the gap for the keel. Planking definitely gets much easier after the first course. DSoldano attached the following image(s): Dominick

Thanks Gents, Walter, yes, you are right, in fact, I'm not sure which one I am more nervous about, planking the lower half of the hull or cutting holes (gun ports) in my newly planked ship. I don't want to end up like this or this . Anyway, I got all of course 5 installed and started on course 6. I think it's coming out pretty well. Once I get course 6 completed and all of the pins pulled out I'll post a bunch of pictures of various parts of the planking to get some feedback on how I did. I do notice that the planks seem to vary in thickness a bit. I'm sure it will all sand out fine as the planks are pretty thick. Dominick

Looking at your build so far I don't think you've got anything to be nervous about. Man he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day will cease to be Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

Thanks Gents, This being my first one I'm not sure what to expect. It's been very hot here the last 2 days, 106 yesterday and 103 today (Fahrenheit not Celsius thank God) so not too much progress. Luckily the humidity here is very low so it's bearable. Anyway, I suffered through it for an hour or so and finished course 6 by tapering the aft planks and forming and chamfering the bow planks. Tomorrow morning when it's cooler I'll pull the few remaining pins and post a bunch of pictures. Dominick

looking good. Just make sure the plank ends at the bow go suitably far over the keel edge to alow you to cut them back without leaving any gaps. you will need a 4mm gap so you need the gap to be narrower for now. Johnny, Thanks. Jase, thanks for the info, I was going by the photos in the official build and wasn't sure of the correct gap. I just measured my work. It turns out that except for the first 2 planks laid (the first course - 1 per side) it's exactly 4mm at the moment - dumb luck i guess - I'll be sure to make it narrower going forward. Dominick

Hi Dominick, look at the official diary, issue 21 again. Instructions do say to leave a 4mm gap between the planks ends at the bow, they don't need to be any narrower than this. Later in issue 39 you will widen the gap even further to 6mm to accomodate the stem. .. Hope the helps.. Regards Alan

Andy, Alan, thanks. I took a bunch of pictures of the first 6 rows of planking. I only have the iPad, the wife and I are on a mini holiday over this weekend. Its Independence Day here in the U.S. So I will need to upload one per post - I wonder why I can't correctly upload multiple photos to a post from the iPad? The first few are of the bow area.
