I've had the Unimat for a few years, it does have it's uses but is quite tiresome to assemble and dis-assemble when you need to use it. The sander and hand drill are too cumbersome for most applications, I tend to use it mainly as a lathe and mill but even that is infrequent. On the whole it is too small and underpowered for many tasks.
I've now invested in a Dremel with flexible shaft and drill stand, find it covers most of the drilling, milling & sanding tasks that I do.
Mike, Ive just bought a DB 250 with the same set of turning tools, must say your first attempt looks much better than mine! Did you use the gouges straight from the box or did you hone them first? Mine didn't seem to cut too well but could be down to technique.
Thanks
Wilfy

Wilfy Hi Wilfy I used them straight from the box, I haven't dared attempt to sharpen them yet. I did spend a bit of time watching some videos on you-tube of full size wood turning. They did emphasise the importance of getting the height and angle right. I found that with a bit of experimenting it just happened, haven't had the lathe out for a couple of months so will be interesting when I start the spars soon for HMS Halifax to see if I can remember how to do it!
