Zeptrader, what are the dimensions of that batten you are using in post No 8? My local friendly hardware store owner said that was a good plan for a jig, as it gives firmer support to the false keel, being wood against wood, as he thinks that metal brackets might damage the wood should there be an accident such as a sudden careless knocks..much obliged...John..ThumpUp

Hi Jonny, that was for my Syren scratch build, I think its really anything that does not interfer with the frames, the height is dependant on the area you have free, the width is not. But with the Victory build we wont be able to do this as the frames lay level with the false keel.
I have been thinking thought the metal bracket good idea coul be replaced with wooden blocks.

I got those stips for the Syren from my local wood shop, they have pretty much all sorts, I guess it would come under beading or sorts, trail and error for me.
what ever size suits your model would work. As for possible damage I'm no too worried about that as those brackts are holding part of the ship that will be planked hence wont be seen, as long as you dont over do it, ie too tight and rough brackets.
Hope that helps mate.

Cheers mate..I think that I will go for the wooden block idea, sounds the best of both worlds, as long as they are in a dead straight line (using a builder's level) I reckon I can get round it..still waiting to get a few more issues before taking up any construction..so I have got time on my hands to sort out the jig..Ta mate.ThumpUp

Hi all, Well just like to say that the jig I posted over a month ago has done its rounds and now hopefully everybody is sorted.

So Just to let you know I got 100 50mmx50mm SQ CORNER BRACE ANGLE BRACKETS for £6.95 on Ebay, now thats a bargain!!

The advantage of these brackets is they are 'square'. as opposed to the'L' Brackets I got which are well off 'square'

Hi All

im new to this forum and wooden model building but i hope someone can answer me a simple question, it would have to be simple coming from me lol

in admins post re the Keel Jig His board is only 30" long, and indeed the completed keel section looks to be between 24" and 26" long, now to my simple question where does the other 2 foot of the boat go if there is no more keel section for frames?

the ship is supposed to be 4 ft 1 inch aprox

many thanx hopefully some of you more experienced guys understand what i am trying to ask

BigGrin the overall length is just over 49 inches this will be from the very stern of the ship to the end very end of the stick at the bow (cant remember but think this mast is called a bow sprit)
we will learn the proper names as we go along

ps welcome to the forum

The jig base only needs to be slightly longer than the keel itself, hence the dimensions in my drawing.

Hi Pam,
Colin is on the right track, follow is advice.

I have used angle brackets (two packets of eight from Homebase ) plus a hardwood shelf from the same place, approx cost £24:00.

The length of the shelf is 33",by 10.5" ( dont forget the bow sprit is 18".)

The size of the angle brackets are 50 mil.

Hope this helps

Hi to All

I was busy reading through all the posts. I have seen the plans for the jig by Son of Bulwark. I am going to make use of his design and incorporate it into a work table that I am designing. I will build it first just to verify the plans and then published it on this forum. Basically it will incorporated a turn table(lazy Susan) to which the jig is flush mounted to the level of the table top. It will have a sliding draw type system which will allow a full rotation of the jig. The jig can be rotated to any side and it makes it easier to build on. A problem that I had building the Bounty was picking it up to work on the otherside.

Please be patient. If I can sort out the turntable setup it will make the plan easier to design.

Thanks
Current Build: HMS Victory

Built: HMS Bounty

Next Build: Sovereign of the Seas Started collecting. Redrawing of plans for Santisima Trinidad for a scratchbuild. Santisima Trinidad - waiting for launch.

just wondering.. what's the spacing between the two brackets? so that the keel would fit in nicely without any unnecessary gaps?

This type of jig is fine until you come to adding the planking and later on cut out the gun ports. A stand is provided as part of the build and this is useful but does have its limitations.

I built my own style to allow the model to be presented to me at an angle of 45 degrees which made it a lot easier and more comfortable to work on the hull both for cutting the ports and later painting ( If you have opted for the painted version.)

I have attached some pictures of the jig which i made from offcuts of wood I had in the garage
