Hi folks.

For the last decade or so I have been harboring a desire to try my hand at model ship building. I've been able to resist so far, but after seeing this particular model, my resolve is weakening. :p

My question is really whether it would be possible for a patient beginner to complete this model with decent results. My only experience with models was building model cars back in the 70's when I was a kid.

Any thoughts would be appreciated before I commit to this beautiful but rather expensive ship.

Thanks.

Hi Broven, a simple answer to your question is 'Yes', without any doubt at all. I was a complete beginner to this hobby and like you I was filled with concern as to whether I was taking on too much. What I found was a kit that anyone starting out could take on, with its detailed instructions together with the help available on this forum resulted in it turning out to be a fabulous experience. I have now got several kits both on the go and in stash waiting to be built. Perhaps my diary will convince you to have a go, it outlines all of the concerns and problems I encountered and how they were overcome, all of which was great fun, link below... Good luck with it and hope to see your progress if you decide to have a go.....Cool Cool

Hello Broven and welcome to the forum. I would say it's entirely possible for a beginner to build the sovereign ,the instructions are excellent and there is always someone on the forum who will help out if needed.

Thanks for the encouragement! The build diaries (and this forum, of course) look like they'll be an excellent resource.

I believe I'll give it a go. :)

Heheh, haven't been this excited about something in a while.

Thanks again,
Tim

I'm a total beginner and I'm building it, and it's a thrilling adventure that I love every minute of. Don't hesitate :)

Hi Broven,

I have to echo what the others are saying. I myself have never build a wooden model ship before, however with the instructions supplied I think I am doing a half decent job of it.

I believe with a little patience anyone will be able to build one of these ships and would encourage you to go for it BigGrin

Hi Broven,
Welcome to the forum.I am forum support for USA so let me know if I can help you in any way.I just ordered the Soveriegn too.I think the best feature about these partwork kits is that give you superb instructions and break down the assembly into manageable pieces.I started an HMS victory kit I bought but gave up because there were no instructions.I am looking forward to this kit and as others have posted there are not only amazingly talented builders here who are very generous with their time in helping people that may get stuck

Hi Tim, BigGrin

I don`t think you can go wrong.

Follow the instructions, ask if you have an issue and ask again if needed. There is a wealth of help and advise on this forum and it`s all free.

If you make a diary of your progress, then people will be able to assist should you have a problem a lot earlier and make any required resolution a lot easier.

All that said "ENJOY".

Regards

Hi ggladden BigGrin

Am sure you'll love the Sots build and don't forget, help and advice comes free so just ask.

If you also start a diary, it helps people give accurate and faster responses.

For now though just ENJOY.

Hi Broven
I bought a partworks kit of the HMS Victory by DelPrado around 12 years ago now, i got the framework together and the decks on and then left it for 10 years sitting around with nothing done on it, then when i decided to start building it again i went online to look for info on it and it led me to this forum, i then realised that what i had bought wasn't a great kit but there are a couple of guys on here that are building the same kit and what they have done with theirs is truly amazing, not only are the DeAgostini kits a lot better, with the help advice and generosity of people on this forum you cant go far wrong, before that i was only used to dealing with plastic kits, you gotta start somewhere and you've started with a cracker.
Regards
Paul
