BigGrin Hi Steve

A set of watchmakers screwdrivers should do you for most of the build although some larger screw drivers will be needed later on in the build for the large brass screws on the couplings for the engine to tender and bogie mounting. You will also need either epoxy resin or medium superglue for some fixings.
If you are building the brass version then remember to wash your hands a lot when handling the parts to remove the natural grease from your hands as polishing will be a problem with the majority of parts fitted but if your painting like I did with mine then its a case of degreasing, using an etch primer and then paint.
I used Railmatch weathered black for my build along with firebox red.
Its a great build and seriously heavy and big when finished, enjoy your build and any questions just ask we are all here to help if needed.

Regards

Hi Andy, thanks for the advice heading off to find some good quality screwdrivers. Not sure if to paint or not i like the brass look as it shows off the metal work better. I think i will be using super glue as i have struggled with epoxy in the past finding it very messy. I plan to build whilst still working on the train layout which is a constant on going project. Lucky to havre my own man cave 15 by 10 so a dedicated bench will be avaiable for the d51 until completion when i can sneek it into the house for display........... cant't wait to get started may even start a build log as i have been reading the logs on here for some time which have inspired me hope another loco will come along as i love this scale for building but the usual bras and solder kits would be beyond my ability
Thanks again Steve

For some of the more heavy parts or those that require "manouvering" you'll want to use epoxy nonetheless. CA glue may bind before you have a piece sitting correctly in the right place. It will also become brittle with time, so for heavier parts like the smoke box door this may impact longetivity. Wouldn't want to have things breaking off while you show the kit around.

For screwdrivers from what I needed so far, you're looking at PH0 and PH1 size Philips head screwdrivers.

Tweezers would be good, especially with a bent or curved front for easier manouvering.

You'll need some modeling clamps or at least clothes pegs.

Also get a set of needle files, some pieces benefit from being less smooth in the spots where you're gluing. Get some sandpaper starting at grade 400 all the way up to 1000/1200. A fibreglass pencil also comes in handy.

Propanol-2 (Iso propyl alcohol / rubbing alcohol) is great for cleaning up the parts before installing them. You'll want to get rid of any oils left from manufacturing. Acetone will help get rid of glue that went where you don't want it. There's a cotton bud very firmly glued to the inside of the smoke box door in delivery 1. Vinegar essence will get rid of this promptly and cleanly.

Get some latex glove (or one of the non-latex alternatives if allergic; NO COTTON!). Wear these whenever handling the parts.
