Alan and Jase, Thanks. I started drilling the 2mm holes for the gun ports today and figured I better ask a question. Is it ok to drill through the gun mount beam or should the drill just go in a bit? I went completely through on the first 5 thinking that was best but am now having doubts so I thought I'd ask. I plan to start cutting tomorrow. Dominick

Hi Dominick, you ask your questions on anything you are unsure about and we'll help where we can....  .. It is fine to drill all the way through the gun supports, they won't be seen when the build is complete..... Regards Alan

Alan, thanks. Well, I drilled all of the holes in the centers of the gun ports. First I used an awl (instead of a centering bit) to pre-start the drill holes and then used a pin vise with a 2mm drill bit to drill through the planking. To make sure the cannons were perfectly perpendicular to both the false keel and the water I used a waterline marker I bought off of eBay. Now I know the the drill entered the cannon support beam in the right place and the right direction. DSoldano attached the following image(s): Dominick

Paul and Andy, Thanks. Actually, I got the first 8 cannon ports cut today (the port side starboard ones). I would have done more but it was 93F today and the garage got a bit too hot to be enjoyable after the early morning. I'll post pictures tomorrow of both the already cut ports and the technique I'm using to cut them - it differs slightly from the instructions but seems to be working ok. The first two were the toughest and after that I kind of got the technique down. I had one instance where a plank cracked a little bit but (there is a small triangular bit missing) but I should be able to cut a piece to fit the gap nicely. I'll post a picture of that as well. Just a quick gripe and then I'll move on - I HATE CANNON PORTS - but hopefully I will forget the pain and do another warship. otherwise I'll have to stick to merchant vessels. It should be cool in the early morning tomorrow so I may be able to cut a few more if I start early before work. Dominick

Lovely work Dominick. Cutting gun ports is the type of task you either love or hate but if you drill small holes around the inner perimeter of the gunport then I think you will find cutting them out and finishing off to be far far easier..... .. Will be following...

Wow, What great comments. Thanks to everyone. Well, the first set of cannon ports is complete on both sides. on the first one (aft port side) I tried using the Dremel with cutting bit and working around the inside of the line. It was sketchy and probably had a high potential for slipping so I quickly changed over to drilling holes around the inside of each cannon port, first the 4 corners and then in between each set of corner holes. Then I used my hobby knife to carefully shave or cut away wood up to the line. I found that a sawing motion worked best and didn't require as much pushing force (which was safer as well) I had two instances where there were screw ups. One was at the bow on the port side, second cannon port back, the one between the two frames but not up against either. I must have lost my line on one side and cut all the way to the frame. So, I glued three pieces of planking together, edge to edge, to match the planking, trimmed it for height and glued it in place. Looks pretty good and will disappear after sanding and paint I think. The other was where a plank must have been weak and a small chunk came out. I cut a triangular piece of plank, glued it in place, and then trimmed it when it was dry. You'll never know after sanding. Here are some of the cut ports close up. I am happy with most of them but there are a few where some filler will be required after they are lined. Not too bad for the first 32 ever done and I got bette as I went along. I think under paint the filler probably won't show. I'm thinking of lining the ports using a technique I saw elsewhere, maybe on this forum, where I make a box out of the lining material to ensure all of the ports are perfectly square and equal sized, and then slicing it into the right depth pieces for installation. Glue them in, trim and fill as necessary for a perfect fit. DSoldano attached the following image(s): Dominick
