Hi David, again another excellent build of this classic submarine. I have yet to make a start with mine, but at least I have enough parts to really crack on with it until I run out of parts and will be waiting for the postman. I am just sticking with the bog standard build as I am not really that bothered about displaying the interior. I really would have preferred the model to have been a full model like the Airfix 1/72 Type V11C. But at least I can display it showing the closed side if I choose to. Keep up the good work, it's looking very good so far. Thanks for the input, I'm sure you'll make an excellent job of it whichever version you build. On a personal note, I'm not sure how much detail will be included on the hull. When I've looked at other models of the type VII-C, for instance the Revell model,there's lots of rivet detail on the hull, whereas with ours, I've noticed that the plastic pieces we've already been supplied with are remarkably devoid of any such detail. Still, I'm no expert on matters and a relative novice at the art of building models, so all may be revealed later on in our build.
Once again Geoff, good luck with your build and look forward to seeing some pics of your work.

Yes you are right David, this model doesn't feature any rivet detail on the plastic parts, like the Revel model does. A bit of a let down really, but having said that, I am not really a rivet counter  It should still turn out to be a nice model when completed. BUILD DIARY INFO:
I've just spotted some information about our model that may help when we get to the stage of applying the 'Sawfish' decals.
While I was reading through the magazines that came with this months parts, I came across the following: In issue 142, page 178 in the section "The Wolf Of The Deep", it says that during it's stay in port after it's third patrol, the captain of the U-96 had a caricature of a laughing sawfish painted on the conning tower.
What is interesting is that the information says that the 'sawfish' was 'black'. The set of decals included in our build only have either 2 'blue' or 2 'green' sawfish to use.
So I wonder which colour is right here?
My best guess is that the sawfish on U-96 is indeed black, and the 2 other colours may apply to to the emblems used when captain Lehmann-Willenbrook was appointed chief of the 9th U-boat flotilla in Brest took this emblem with him and was used on other u-boats in that flotilla under his command. What do you guys think?

BUILD UPDATE #40
This update is working with more of the wooden strips, mainly planking the bow.
This stage is being postponed until I've fitted the torpedo room modification.
BUILD UPDATE #41
This weeks issue contained the 2 parts (#132 & #133) which fit on forward hull above the torpedo room.
After cutting the parts from the sheet and smoothing off any rough edges, the ballasting vent slots were cut out and cleaned up.
Before attaching the parts in their correct location, they were offered up and the frames marked with pencil where they show through the slots. Using my craft tool with a rotary saw blade, I cut out several 'v' shaped notches where marked on the frames so that the offending frames would not be as visible when the 2 parts were fitted. I also painted them matt black hoping that this would make them even less noticeable.
With that completed, the parts were glued into place, 1 side at a time, clamped and left to dry. the following morning, the slight overhang at the front was filed flush with the front frame.

Thanks Steve,I'd put money on that. Thats going to be a mammoth task.
This is the first model I've built that's constructed in this strange way of mixing plastic and wood so it will be a big learning curve for me, and not just with all that filling and sanding. I've never attempted anything like this what with all the mods I'm putting in like the resin parts for the torpedo room and then customising with led lighting in all the compartments as well, but at least I'll get some new experiences from it. Then there's all the photo etch as well, which I've never worked with before. I just hope it all works out ok.

BUILD UPDATE #42
Just another 2 parts to fit this week - the 2 side panels at the stern with cut out flood slots.
Everything again quite straightforward with just a small modification the the frames where they will sit.
Using my craft tool and circular blade, I cut out some 'V' shaped slots where the flood slot openings were so that the frames didn't show through. These and the surrounding frames were then painted matt black. Before fitting the 2 panels, a small off-cut of wood strip was glued to the back end of each part to facilitate the laying of more wooden strips to complete the stern end. Unfortunately, as you can see from the pictures, I made the mistake of gluing the off-cuts on the same side of both parts
Fortunately, I noticed the mistake while I was shooting the picture and it was easy enough to remove one of the strips and re-attach it to the correct side.

BUILD UPDATE #43
Hi everyone and first off, thanks for all the nice comments I've received this week.
This week's issue contained another bundle of 65 wooden strips 1.5 x 5 160mm to finish off the first planking at the stern of the u-boat.
I started off working up from the lower part of the hull that was planked in a previous week, until I reached the rear side panel with the flood slots, filling in the remaining gap with strips that were cut down along the length to fit the space.
Then continuing working up, I laid a further 3 strips, filling up the area between the side panel and the very last frame. Then, following the line of the stern frames, a strip was laid at the top after shaping the few mm's to fit, then laying 2 more strips, shaped to fit into the remaining gap.
The instructions finish by asking us to mask off the flood slot side panels and give the whole hull a sand down to ensure a smooth finish for laying the second layer of wooden strips. I have skipped this stage at the moment as I still have the torpedo room conversion to complete and install before I can get to that stage.
Well that's it for a couple of weeks when the next lot of parts arrives.
