So the concept of photo etched parts is new to me. As a Gundam builder metal detail upgrades are not. This seems similar but different. I notice some are just metal detail parts that go on the kit, but some have decals that go over top? Can some one explain the process a bit more? I am contemplating using PE kits in the cockpit of,the falcon.

photoetched parts are generally made of brass and have a very high level of detail. They are created by a photochemical reaction and are often used to add details to plastic models. The biggest downside to photoetch parts is that because they are made similar to a photograph they are flat.In order to make a 3d shape you have to bend the parts. In most cases there are bend lines etched into the parts to make it easier to bend them and there are special tools that are helpful. They usually need to be painted, but some manufacturers offer prepainted photoetch parts. They are commonly used for instrument panels. The panel is made from the photoetch material and the dials for the instruments are printed on clear plastic. The clear plastic is glued to the back of the instrument panel to give a 3d effect.

Thank you darbyvet for that description. Can anyone link me to some before and after photos? Or post some in this thread? I been doing some searching and ready of build diary's but can't seem to find what I am looking for as a comparison.

Hello Metal Mech,

The two links below give useful explanations as to how to apply photo-etched parts to a model and should help you get started:

Hope that helps?
