Thanks all BigGrin

I am slowly working up, its the bottom part of the hull that I nervous over at the moment, will see soon enough how well my shaping has done.

I am now following the instructions closely so as not to make a mistake.

That stand is pretty cool. Did you make it?

It is a pretty cool stand, I did build in the sense that it came flat packed BigGrin

I got it after seeing it reviewed on here, there are few people on here now using them.

It is the Occre Portable workstation you can see my build of it on page 2 of my diary

http://forum.model-space...sts&t=15769&p=2

I got it from here

http://www.cornwallmodel.../occre-workstation.html

It is a fantastic bit of kit and I would highly recommend it, as many others here would too Cool

I have only done one more row since my last update, I am not going to post an update after each single row so dont worry LOL

Im wondering what methods people use to keep the planks held down as I am about to get too high up the sides for my clamps to reach Confused

BigGrin Hi Dave

Nicely done as for the planking you have two choices use copper nails and a pin pusher but leave them proud so they can be removed after the aliphatic or PVA is dry and then the pins can be used again. On he first planking that you are doing right now using pins is fine as any holes will be covered by the second planking. The second planking can be glued in position using super glue so that there will be no pin holes to fill just make sure the edges are tapered so no gaps show. Hope this helps.

Regards

Thanks Steve & Andy

I guess I was just trying to avoid using Pins on the layer of planks, however I forget to consider that I didn't really need to push them all the way in so I could take them out later, problem solved BigGrin

A bit more progress made on the planking, I am almost half way up now BigGrin You will see on one side I have filled in the gaps at the bottom. Only one carved out the cannon holes on one side so far

I have also jumped ahead in the instructions and started the planking against the bottom of the hull and false keel, the reason for this is I was concerned as to whether I had shaped it correctly. As you will see in the pictures its not 100% perfect but looks ok and once planked, filled and sanded should work out about right ThumpUp

I think I am doing well so far with the planks BigGrin

Thank Jase BigGrin

I have opted to follow the instructions with the planking hoping that I cant go too wrong that way, they dont mention anything about tapering yet. There are gaps that will need filling with tapered planks though.

I couple more planks added have been, I am using the pins now as suggested to hold the planks in place as my clamps wont reach, I am not pushing them in all the way as they will be removed before the final layer is applied.

I think I may have to invest in a new pin pusher as mine took a drop and fell apart, I think I have lost a part when I put it back together, although it wors fine the pins keep falling out now so its making it awkward.

You might notice that I accidently sanded some of the false keel to a bit of a wedge at the stern, I have had to glue some shims in using off cuts of planks.

Not far to go up now. I thin this kit has an advantage over some of the others ones with regards to the cannon ports as this one has cast metal port surrounds so the cuts dont have to be supper neat BigGrin

There's a lot of fear mongering going around I've noticed. Maybe not so much here but on other forums the spiel goes:

- Oh, yeah, so you're building a ship. Yeah well remember to laser calibrate all the ribs or you can throw away the boat.
- Also you need to be super careful with the fairing. Spend at least 5 months on that or you can throw away the boat.
- Don't even get me started on the planking, you're gonna mess this one up and you can throw away the boat. Man, do I hate planking. Hate Hate HAAAAATE.
- Wouldn't you rather build a plastic model car?

And you look at all this as a newbie and think: "Oh [preferred deity], what have I done? I am going to mess this up so much."

And then it turns out it isn't so bad at all really.

Also, your boat is nice.

Hi dave planking coming on real well.doing great job.I was initially daunted by this job when did victory.but actually found it easier an it looks.did learn to be selective with wood for tight bends though.found generally the lighter shade bits bent easier than the dark.and pick the straiter grain bits for this.then use all other planking in middle where no bend required.keep up the Google work.cheers mick.BigGrin BigGrin

I quite enjoy planking - it can seem daunting as a whole but you need to think of each plank as a separate job and fit each plank as best you can. Take your time and you will be fineBigGrin
