BigGrin Hi All

Before I go any further with the build the copper tiles needed to be weathered off. To do this I sent for some Liver of Sulpher Gel this gel is used in the jewelry trade to get patina effects on copper brass ect. The gel has to be mixed with warm water [it has a bad egg smell that is quite strong] and the effects are from light to black depending how its applyed to the metal. Some of you will like the effect and others will not I think but Im quite happy with it as it sort of grows on you as you look at it more.

BigGrin Hi every one,

Thanks for looking in and your comments the deck will soon start to look a little busyer as the cannons go in. I still have to make up 4 large cleats for this deck but they will need some improvements on the supplied one's. Thanks Hans for your comments on the Hull I think its a case of loving or hating it here without the middle ground. More soon.

BigGrin Hi All

The inside of the 24lb gun deck has 4 large cleats, 2 each side for the Mainsail Tack and Foresail Sheet. These cleats are pre-cut from 3mm Walnut and are 2 dimensional until worked, also I have the feeling that ropes will at some point be wrapped around them so they needed to be more proud than as supplied so I added a backing piece after shaping the cleat and then added brass rods to secure the cleats to the hull after painting them white. More soon.

She's looking fab Andy, lovely work throughout....Drool Drool .. Have to admit though, I just wasn't too sure on the hull, initially thinking it was a little overdone. Looked at it several times and even had a look on my 40inch TV monitor and the more I studied it the more I liked it, the large monitor really did show the effect in its full glory.... Believe now it is an excellent representation as to how the hulls of these ships would have looked after being exposed to all the sea elements..... A good move on your part and one that works very well indeed. Well done....Cool Cool Cool

BigGrin Hi Alan

Thanks for taking the time to look in and reply. I knew from the start the effect I was going to do would not be everyone's cup of tea shall we say but after looking at depth at the perils of coppering hulls at the time she was built and the misunderstanding of the effects of copper plates, sea water and iron. Most ships of this period were bolted together at major stress points with large iron bolts then finished in the usual way and the copper plates attached last of all. when the ship entered the water the effects of copper ,sea water and iron in fact was very much alike to a crude battery that slowly eroded the iron bolts until they dissapeared or broke thus weakening the integrity of the ship the colouration from this effect would be dark green to black not the verdigris seen on roofs as that is more to do with the copper oxydising in air.
The best way to describe this effect on the hull is your central heating system the same reaction occurs between the copper pipe and the iron in the boiler causing the pipes to block up over time with a black sludge unless an inhibiter is added to the system to prevent this.

At the time of the Agamemnon's sinking it had already been noted that most of her major bolts were either broken or dissapeared from the above effects and that it had also been noted that if ordered back to the UK from the west indies she was in such bad shape that her survival of the voyage was doubtful unless she was securely roped together around the outside of the ship just to allow her to sail home.

Thanks for this Andy, a great piece of research and a very interest read as to how you came about doing the hull the way you did.... Definitely gives a real authentic look that suits the build very well....Cool Cool .. Thanks again, appreciated....
