Issue 5 aka "The boring one" Installed 2 ribs.... that's it. Also, the more I looked at the carronade the more I got "angry" at the huge eyes I made for the pulley blocks. So I remade those this time putting in the blocks the right way around (the instructions are false there). Then I made a promo shoot with all the fiddly parts done so far.

Hi Greyhawk, lovely work and well done on changing the eyes on the cannon blocks, looks much better. These builds are always slow to start off with but later in the series you'll end up with so much more work you'll probably have difficulty in keeping up with the issues.... Regards Alan

Thank you all. This is a very fun build indeed. Issue 6 With the hero introductions over (Mr. Cannon, The Anchor, and Carro Nade) the game shifts into tutorial mode and has us build a longboat to teach us some of the techniques required later. Now this one is where one must be veeeery careful and handle all the parts like a broken baby bird. Any pressure at all may lead to a part snapping. Not that this happened to me, nope, Sir, never happened, you must be mistaken.

Looks like you're ready to start planking the launch and you are right, it is quite delicate to handle at this stage and care does need to be taken. A lot of builders have actually used superglue for the planking of the launch, found it a lot easier than using PVA.... .. Look forward to seeing your progress... Regards Alan

Almost, still need to do the straking and I'm deadly afraid of messing that part up. Also, it seems that some of the ribs in the middle of the launch are a bit too short. This rib is about a millimeter shorter than the others on both sides. Gonna have to either underfill this one or go ahead and sand the whole thing down to that level. Haven't decided yet, need to sleep over it.

You could do either but if the rest of the ribs are OK now, then filling sounds easier.
On the main hull, if it was short I filled, if it was proud I rubbed down further and, believe me, some ribs were well short.

Issue 7 - The first hurdle Now this is the one where the difficulty curve ramps up. Not so much because of this More ribs for the rib godbut because of this You call that planking?!So yeah, first plank job in my life, whew. It went... interesting. The bending was easy enough, but adjusting the shape was, whooo boy. I spent at least half an hour per plank with shaping and I still wasn't entirely satisfied in the end. Thankfully rubbing in some white glue and sanding the boat while the glue was still wet sealed most of it right up. Also did I tell you about the time I was almost done with planking and then I broke one that was sitting right between other planks that were already done and then I had to redo that plank with one of the spares? Because I'd rather not talk about this. In retrospect, after careful analysis and as advice to anyone building this in the future, the bow formers are responsible for any and all problems I encountered with planking. If you're going to built this launch, cut down the bow formers to half their size in both length and width. And now I've earned a beer.

Nice result on the launch there and you have tackled one of the hardest trials of planking namely the launch which you have done very well. This learning curve although a challenge helps you understand the needs to complete the main planking on the hull, which after the launch will be less daunting due to the experience gained here.Well done. Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Great job on your first attempt at planking. The launch is not the easiest thing to plank but as you have now seen, patience with this really does pay off. Taking half an hour to apply one plank is nothing unusual and as you progress with the planking you will find you will get quicker as the experience increases.... Very well done...

I think one of the major obstacles was the flimsyness of the planks with them being only 0.45 mm thick. The shaping process should be much more straightforward with the actual ships planks.
