BUILD UPDATE #45
Hi again.
This update sees the continuation of the second planking.
Issue #45 contained 1 plastic sprue with the first 2 parts of the side cladding for the deck structure, which are stored for use in a couple of weeks.
Working with the 1.5x5x160mm strips from last week's issue, and the 1.5x5x180mm strips from a previous issue, work started on the left-hand side of the hull at the stern, continuing around the underside of the stern (using the off-cuts from the wooden strips) and up the right-hand side of the stern section.
Planking then continued on the mid-section of the upper hull between the 2 cut-aways, working down onto the lower hull, then moving towards the bow and the forward section of the lower hull.
A preliminary sanding was applied to these parts to tidy things up a bit (the main part of the sanding will be done a little further into the build).

Hi Andy,
I was wondering that myself. Then I thought about the 'Dissolved putty' from 'Mr.Hobby' you recommended to me, so I got out an old paintbrush and dabbed some over the scratches, left overnight, and 'hey presto', they seem to have vanished. All that's needed now is a polish up with 'Micro Mesh', then some primer and we'll never know the scratches were made. Of course, I'll leave the priming until all the sanding has been finished, but it should come up a treat.

It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be at first: just followed the instructions and laid the strips copying the pictures in the magazine. It looked a bit of a mess at first, but with some preliminary sanding it turned out alright. The problem was that after the first layer of strips were laid, there wasn't an awful lot of depth between the surface of the 1st layer and the surface of the plastic cladding that surrounds it (probably less than 1mm in most places). I overcame that problem in other places by using a chisel shaped blade in a craft knife and carefully whittling away some of the thickness of the 1st layer to achieve a reasonable depth to 'butt' the final layer of strips up to the cladding.

Hi David, she's coming along nicely now. I think the sanding - filling - sanding - filling - sanding....... is the worst part of the build, a necessary evil but worth the effort in the long run.

Hi again.
Not a build update, just the latest addition to my tool kit in preparation for the enormous amount of photo etch that's going to be included in this kit.
It's a photo etch part cut-out kit, (part no: SMS015) by 'the Small Shop' and supplied the 'ScaleModelShop'.
It comes with a clear acrylic press with chamfered edge to line up the very small parts and hold them whilst cutting, thus avoiding them from springing away and being devoured by the 'carpet monster'.
Also included are 3 black acrylic tiles to cut the PE on.

BUILD UPDATE #46
Hello, and first off, thanks for the nice comments that were posted.
Issue #46 came with another sprue containing 3 more sections of the side cladding of the deck section.
Together with the 2 parts from the last issue, these pieces were removed from the sprue and carefully cleaned up with a small file and sandpaper. There are several flood slots on the side cladding which I then proceeded to open out with a suitably sized drill and a small diamond file. The openings were then cleaned up and then I used some Tamiya Extra Fine Cement' painted into the openings with a small brush to smooth off the edges.
That's it for this update. Next time sees the side cladding fitted to the deck section. Thanks for looking in and thank you again for the positive comments.
