Thanks for all the comments. I have now finished the torpedoes, I painted them with Alclad steel then alclad brass for the nose. The scratch built props have also been added (pics 1 & 2) I have also started to finish the first layer of planking at the bow. I painted the port side frame black and fitted the vent backing plate and started the planking, pics 3 & 4. On the port side I have planked the lower hull below the cutout, pic 5. I am leaving the port vent backing plate until I get the next set of parts as I would like to remove 4-5mm from the lower edge to improve visibility of the torpedo room but want to see how easy it will be to modify the etch brass part before deciding. Nice work on those torpedoes Graeme, bet that was a fiddly job cutting those prop blades out. Don't want to appear to be copying you Graeme, but I had the same idea about being able to show more of the ceiling detail, but like you, I'm waiting to see how easy it will be to modify the brass panel. Great minds and all that Happy building David P.S: My final resin parts arrived today so no excuses not to make a start. Just got buy some paint now!!!(more excuses)

Hi Graeme
A quick question for you. Did you have to do much 'tweaking' of the framework to get your resin parts to fit together correctly in situ? I can't seem to make my parts fit very well at all, the ceiling element in particular. Thanks

David, in answer to your question I didn't have to do much to the framework except make sure where the internal frames had been cut away the stubs were filed/sanded level with the rest of the frame.
I did have to tweak the pre-cut slots in the resin ceiling pieces a little and slightly shorten the longer one at the bow end to get it to fit against the smaller one. I also had to sand a bit off the sides of the bow vertical/longitudinal frame to get the torpedo tubes to fit properly and not catch on the frame.

After a wee while off, now back to the build. I have started the second planking on the starboard side and the only minor problem to date was the need of a small packing piece just forward of the plastic part to bring the second plank just proud of the plastic, pic 1. I have now received the brass overlay for the bow vents and after careful measuring of the hull decided I could remove 5mm from the width of both the mdf under plate and the brass overlay. This will bring it tothr level of the resin ceiling of the torpedo room. With this in mind I made a simple jig to ensure even cutting of both parts. This consisted of cutting a 5mm deep groove in a piece of scrap beech, a second piece of beech and a steel rule for clamping thr part to be cut. The mdf/brass part is set in the groove and the beech set on one side and the rule on the other and a couple of small 'G' clamps used to clamp them firmly together. This can then be clamped in a bench vice and a razor saw run along the steel rule. Pics 2 & 3. Well I plucked up the courage and made the cuts - the jig worked perfectly and both the mdf and brass parts matched once cut. I ave glued the mdf part to the hull and can now continue with the second planking. Graeme pemberg attached the following image(s):

Hi, it's been a couple of weeks but I've been working on the Akagi and been collecting tools and materials to have a go at making my own resin parts and photoetch - mainly for future HMS Hood project. Anyway, back to this build. I have now finished the second planking, drilled out the vents on the removeable deck sides and fitted them to the deck. I had minor fit issues with the plastic deck parts on both sides - seemed to be approx 2mm too long for the hull section - but this was easily sorted by gently filling a little off the ends of each of the five parts on each side. This slight problem could have been due a difference between the original bow formers and the replacement ones from the torpedo room enhancement. I will leave all filling and sanding until later in the build although I will have to sand the upper mid sections prior to fitting the multitude of small wood pieces which are fitted to the slots on the underside of the removeable deck as these have to be sanded, after gluing to the deck, to give a good fit against the hull when the deck is in place. priot to sanding I will mask all adjacent plastic parts to try and minimise any damage to the plastic parts.
