So sad, I know the pilot is still critical but it seems unbelievable that he could have survived that and be pulled from the wreckage Steve

I see there are growing calls to ban UK airshow's or increase the CAA rules to call a halt to inflight manouvres over roads/populated area's.
I doubt there is an airbase/airport in the UK that could meet this?

That sounds rather worrying for air show fans. Obviously it's something that needs to be looked at but let's hope there isn't some blanket ban or knee jerk reaction over this without proper evluation, though the way I'm reading it, there could just be changes to the display pattern so that risky manoeuvres don't occur over high risk areas with such catastrophic consequences as we've witnessed at Shoreham in the event of an accident?
I live about 20 miles from Shoreham and have driven through that set of traffic lights where the accident occurred many times. The airport boundary is right next to the road and apart from a fairly narrow tidal river on the eastern boundary there is a lot of built up area around the airfield and Shoreham is not a large airfield either, so any ban on display flying over roads or built up areas could be fatal to any future shows at the airfield?
Which is rather worrying as Shoreham Air Show has always been one of the better ones in my area and would be great loss to our local display calendar.

CAA announcement - Vintage jet's to face immediate air display restrictions "As a precaution, on Saturday 22 August we took steps to ensure no further flights were made by Hawker Hunter aircraft - this temporary restriction remains in place. Flying displays over land by vintage jet aircraft will be significantly restricted until further notice. They will be limited to flypasts, which means ‘high energy’ aerobatics will not be permitted. The CAA will conduct additional risk assessments on all forthcoming civil air displays to establish if additional measures should be introduced."Will certainly have implications for the Vulcan bomber in her final air display season and those that have already seen her this season may have seen her for the last time in her full glory

I understand the concerns of the CAA and they are right to impose temporary restrictions but I really hope they don't make that a permanent and blanket restriction. It will still be nice to see vintage aircraft in flight even if it was only in horizontal flypasts, but the whole "raison d'etre" for any airshow will be completely lost should that happen!!
Luckily I saw the Vulcan nine days ago at the Eastbourne Air Show, a show in which the Hunter pilot - Andy Hill - was also flying. How sad that a week later he came perilously close to death whilst performing another magnificent aerial display for the public?
Very sad indeed!

A move that was fully expected under the circumstances and the right move I think, until investigations into the tragedy are concluded. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Just wonder if the same action would have been taken for modern jets had a modern jet crashed the same way?

Just wonder if the same action would have been taken for modern jets had a modern jet crashed the same way? I think the same actions would have been taken in terms of being a 'temporary' restriction, which would then most likely be lifted once investigations were over and a cause of the accident was found that could then be used to prevent it happening again? However, part of me worries that with regards to 'vintage' aircraft the authorities may take a blinkered look at the fact that these are old aircraft and treat them much more differently with maybe a blanket ban put in force, regardless of how well the aircraft are maintained and with age being the discriminating factor?
I watched the amazingly talented aircraft restorer John Romain, who owns The Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford flying some of his aircraft at the Eastbourne Airshow a few days ago, including his gorgeous and very rare Bristol Blenheim Mk.1, which is so well restored and maintained that it is like factory fresh, but it could still be seen as an 'old' aircraft regardless of how well maintained it is and likely come under the same umbrella should a ban be enforced - which I think would be very wrong and very sad.
I suppose we will just have to wait and see and keep our fingers crossed that the authorities don't produce a 'knee-jerk' reaction to this terrible accident?

Good news for the Vulcan "Yesterday, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which regulates UK airspace and its users, imposed, with immediate effect, certain restrictions on displays by vintage jet aircraft at all airshows over land. High-energy aerobatics are, for the time being, no longer permitted. Operations Director and Chief Pilot of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, Martin Withers, has spoken to his contacts at the CAA, and has released this statement: “I am pleased to report that I have received assurances from our contacts at the CAA that XH558's 2015 display routine is not classified as aerobatic, and so consequently, we are hoping to continue to fly on through XH558's last season with minimal changes to our display.” " This is an extract from the X558's Newsbyte newsletter that I get Its just reminded me I need to send off my raffle ticket stubs too

For me the guy lost any credibility at "This is a terrible thing to say, but when you look at a guy who is a British Airways captain, has got long hair and wears a cap like that, you get the feeling that he's a glamour puss rather than a professional pilot." Let's wait for the investigators before laying blame and keep from voicing the opinions for the sake of families involved. This is an awful tragedy and the media circus around it is, frankly, disgusting. Whether that guys' evaluation of Andy Hills' actions in the aerobatic manoeuvre is eventually proven to be correct or not, to say such things about the man so close to the tragic event and when people are still very upset is to my mind downright out of order and shameful to say the least. He could at least have given people a bit of time to get over their grieving first - what a disgusting and thoughtless excuse for a human being he must be. He obviously has no morals?
Good news about the Vulcan though.

The pilot has been discharged from hospital and allowed to return home and is due to be interviewed by the Police.
Good that he has pulled through and can hopefully assist with the enquiry.
