One thing I've been doing on and off as a filler during downtime or waiting periods for primer/paint etc is build the Bavarian S3/6 by Eaglemoss.

This 140 issue partwork is a 2011 repackaging of OcCre's BR-18 only somehow made worse. The Bavarian S3/6 itself was a German (or rather Bavarian) modification of the Pacific Class 2'C1'.

The partwork is an example of those very special qualities Eaglemoss has been specialising in in the last years, such as incredibad parts fit, poor quality control, hilarously ineffective packaging, false instructions and (at the time of its actual publication) delivery delays and problems with the manufacturing (how this works with an established product, that's just repackaged I have no idea).

Luckily I got this one on ebay for joke money.

In view of the above and the on again off again nature of the build, this will not be one of my usual OCD monster of the week style diaries, but instead a building summary every 5 issues or so.

Did I say summary? I meant rifftrack.

Issues 1-5 Drivers Cabin and Boiler



The first thing you'll notice is that this one is not made of metal entirely like the D51, but instead uses cheap plywood to provide the structural base upon which then sheet metal is glued and/or nailed.

This is a wise decision as it inherently maximises the potential of parts not fitting which is a great and accurate way to display German precision machinery. The sentence before may have been sarcastic.

Sure enough after building up the drivers cabin with the supplied wood and checking and rechecking every angle with a precision instrument, the whole thing is crooked by several millimeters. Turns out that not only do the left and right side walls differ from each other in thickness, they're not entirely uniform within themselves either. And I don't mean warpage. Prodigious use of files and sandpaper remedies that problem.

The brass sheeting goes on afterwards. Eaglemoss lists the strength of the brass sheeting at 3mm, which is easily reached. If you put ten of the sheets on top of each other.

The side sheetings are too short to cover the wood entirely as intended, so again out comes the sandpaper and filler will be needed to close the gap in the front.

Also if you're building this, please don't try to put on the window frames in their correct positoin, you'll cover up the tiny holes for the sun blinds and will never be able to fix them correctly. Instead place the window frames a millimeter below where they should sit then file the windows to size. You'll thank me later.



The build continues with the boiler again built out of wooden ribs like a ship stranded on a railway track.

Things to note:
- the grooves cut in the spars are too shallow and will not allow the spars to rest stably against each other. Deepen the grooves with a needle file to get an actually stable frame instead of a woodenized flip flop circuit.
- now that you've deepened the grooves, congratulations, the spars ends are not flush with the discs rim anymore. But you need them to be flush later, so hope you've got some spare planks to use as filler, maybe from DeAgostinis Victory. Build the Victory, it's a cool ship.
- When fitting the braces to the discs make sure they're flush against the discs rim. Yes I know they don't reach the the center point where the spars cross. Yes, it looks wrong. Do it anyways.

And that's issue 1-5. I now need to find a way to store about a dozen as yet unused occassionally tiny metal sheet parts in unlabeled flimsy packaging.

Looks an interesting build and I'm not surprised to hear of the poor fit and quality issues of this Eaglemoss part work. I only have my Nissan GTR Eaglemoss build to relate to and that has been a total joke, so much so that I am still waiting on a part that I am missing! This for a series that finished lat the end of December, oh and I still get the odd delivery for parts that I have never requested LOL LOL

I have the OCCRS br18.It is my next train kit to build.

Having built OCCRE Stephensons rocket I thought OCCRE kits were really good.

I am currently building OCCRES Jupiter kit and it has been a struggle for some of the parts.SOme parts are high quality and others are not so good.Fit is variable and you often need to do quite a bit of work to get things together properly.

Once I have finished the Jupiter I think I will take a break from OCCRE kits and do something simpler like hang gliding across the Atlantic or climbing mount Everest with one hand tied behind my back.

Will watch this build with interest as I have been thinking about another train probably the D51 but not just yet as I am just finishing the Jupiter and am all trained out at present. Still look on the bright side Carl, after the Jupiter build any other kit should be straight forward. Will be adding the Lamp to the front of my Jupiter today so watch out for the pictures

My next build is the Artesania Latina Arab Dhow which will be a filler whist I wait for the parts from Eaglemoss for my Orrery. Some of the above comments do not fill me with confidence about delivery from Eaglemoss but I guess I will just have to wait and see

Yeah, this. I've never seen anything even close to approaching the D51s quality and fit. It's on a whole other level.

Issues 6-10

Blowing through these at an accelerated rate right now, as there's not all that much to actually do per issue

In large parts we get the exact same delivery of spars, discs, braces and metal sheets in each of these issues, which are used to build up the internal rib structure of the boiler to its full length.




Of course nothing really fit together again so thank [preferred deity] for spare material from planking Victorys launch.

Also in issue 8 they plain forgot to pack in an integral connecting part so if we were building this on the original time frame we now would have to stop the build entirely for 4 weeks until issue 12 arrived with a "sorry we forgot this thing" extra package. Amusing anecdote: the extra package is mislabeled HELFT 8 ("Help us! 8") instead of HEFT 8 ("Issue 8"). Ok, it's amusing if you're German, I guess.

Meanwhile the instructions are an utter failure, as they forget to point out critical alignment issues when gluing the substructures together. They only actually mention these in the next issue. Someone following this build in the original timeframe might have quite easily borked the build at that point so badly he'd have to get the last 5 issues again. Luckily I have the option of reading ahead, which helps immensely.



A little bit of work was also done on the drivers cabin, cutting out assorted supporting ribs and adding another two window frames. Disregard the glue splotches, they'll get a treatment of Acetone. I was trying to glue the frames without glueing myself to the metal sheet, which was surprisingly complex.



With issue 10 we receive the first of what will be a running theme for the next issues, namely tools and jigs to eventually build the actual outer hull of the boiler. There'll also be lots of straking. I feel like building a ship on tracks.

The tool above in any case is meant to simulate bolts on the brass sheets. Unfortunately it is way too dodgy to actually leave visually effective marks in the supplied test sheet. Oh well, I'll see what I can come up with when we're actually supposed to use it, whenever that will be.

You can buy decal rivets that work very well.You can get them from Micromark.I used them on my Jupiter chimney and they came out pretty good

This one has a reputation in Germany that's kinda as bad as the reputation the James Bonds DB5 build has in the UK. At least it's not pre-lacquered.

But I'll turn it into something alright. If the kit should turn out to be unrecoverable at some point, I'll just built it up into the fruitiest little big train one's ever seen. I'm thinking pink and glitter and unicorns here.
