Hi All
I got a A.L. HMS Endeavour kit for father's day after persistent hints. I opened the kit about 2 weeks ago and made a slow start.
I found the instructions and photos provided quite primitive but never mind it makes it a bit more of a challenge. Never built a wooden ship model before so I've got a lot to learn! But I'm giving it my best shot.

Well, I've constructed the false keel and cross sections and started planing the deck. All that seems relatively simple. I've shaped the bow and had to take off a lot of material but now seems OK. However I'm having problems with how to shape the stern. The infill part supplied seems much narrower than the plywood rear deck by 2-3 mm on each side? Also the plywood rear section cover that the rear windows go on, that goes over the back of the infill is also much wider than the infill? So if I shape to the infill then I would also have to cut back the plywood covers. But that does not seem right as they are laser cut and surely are supposed to be right size or at least close to. I guess I could build up the sides of the infill? I'd love to put a photo here but cant figure out how this program inserts them? Help.

Hi Art I haven't built this kit but if you look at the instructions a bit further on it might show the stern and how it looks. If you resize your pictures to 600/450 they will come out as pictures and not download. Hope this helps Rgd Martyn Building ?

I did a bit of research and there is a chap on Brit Modeller forum who is building the same kit and he found that when he shaped the stern to the infill width then the plywood transom parts were too wide by nearly 10mm and the rear windows would no longer fit if he cut it down. Thus I'm thinking of building up the infill at the stern to match the rear deck width and transom width.

Hi Art, I've not built this kit myself but I wouldn't go altering the plywood gallery parts too much, purely because they're lazer cut. I'd be more inclined to build up where necessary and see how the lines flow from there. Any chance of a pic looking straight down from bow to stern?

Thanks Alan! I've come to the same conclusion. Given that two chaps that have built the same model on Brit Modeller forum have had problems when they reshaped the lazer cut plywood deck cover, then I think I'm well advised to not go that direction. So I bought some balsa sheet and I have started to build up the stern-infill piece and then shape to the lazer cut plywood deck piece and transome.

Hi Art,
Thanks for the pics, they are a great help. From what I can see you’re right to not go shaping the deck section to match the supplied stern infill, that infill I would say is there to support the gallery section and to ensure it is set at the correct angle and curvature. I would do as you’re doing by adding balsa infills to the sides of the supplied infill, ensuring your added infills are wider than the last rib. One thing to consider is where the ends of the planking strips are attached to the gallery piece, (either inside the width of the gallery piece or attached to the outer edge), you may not be able to fit the gallery piece until after the infills have been shaped. When you come to fairing the ribs you would fair the added infills too. This will help to ensure you have nice flowing lines along the hull when you start the planking phase. Hope this helps but should you have any further queries then do get back to us.

I started the planking of the hull finishing off the planks to the inside of the gallery piece. I'm still a bit unsure how I will finish off bottom section of the stern though?

Couple of pointers here, if you resize your pics to 600 x 450 pixels before uploading you will find they appear on your diary, this would save members having to download to view. As for the stern, unless the instructions tell you otherwise then the plywood gallery piece gives you the profile and the only thing I'm unsure of is whether the bottom corners are square or rounded off. Ensure this gallery piece is fitted centrally to the stern and square. Your infills are fine but are only there as a guide to the planking and the planks finishing off inside the gallery piece is also the correct way to go, inset just enough to allow for the fitting of the 2nd planking layer and leaving the minimum of sanding/finishing off. The underside is done the same way unless the instructions direct otherwise. Can you show a couple of pics of the stern area either from the box or from the instructions..... Thanks Alan. I think the sides of the stern will marry ok with the gallery piece. But I think where I'm going to have to do some further modification is the juncture of the bottom of the gallery piece and the rear infill provided as again the gallery piece is about 5 mm too big. I was thinking of two options, or a combination of both. First being to file the bottom of the gallery piece down to fit, as long as the windows still fit in OK. The second is to again build up the area with balsa like the sides. What do you think might work better? I could move the gallery piece up but then the top would sit too high!
