Hey guys, I'm stuck on issue 13 right now, trying to drill a hole in the rudder for the pin. I don't see how it's possible to drill a 1mm hole in extremely soft wood 1,5 mm thick. I'm building my third replacement rudder now and am slowly running out of wood.

Any advice? How did you do this?

I dont really recall having a problem with this, Possibly start with a .5mm bit first then drill out with a 1mm. You could also try to harden the wood first with a thin coat of CA glue painted on and left to set. This will keep the wood together when you drillBigGrin

Hi, its a very tricky operation but it is possible. The common error here is to dry drilling the hole in one go all the way through from one side.. One thing to do is to practice on some scrap wood as drilling the hole straight between the edges of the wood is crucial here.... The way I do this kind of task is to clamp the piece between two pieces of scrap hardwood, (a vice preferably), this helps to ensure the sides don't break away with the drill. Next, using a smaller drill bit, 0.5mm if you have it, drill the first hole but only half way through, turn the piece over and drill from the other side. Once happy the hole is straight then use a larger bit and do the same thing, always checking the hole is still straight. Carry on like this until you get to the correct sized hole. Cool Cool

Hope this helps..

Regards

Thanks everyone. Made it by following both your ideas.

This was a make it or break it moment. I'll be cracking open something nice and expensive when the launch is done next issue. Everything is waaaaay too fragile with the thin wood of the launch. It splits if I look at it too hard. LOL
