kpnuts wrote:Unfortunately it does, it's kind of you to say not, wish I had the skills people like you and gandale to mention a few it seems to me it is not possible to make a plastic kit look like a wood built kit, don't get me wrong I am not saying plastic kits are bad, I love them, but you can't make plastic look like wood, I take my hat off to you guys, I just don't have the patience or skill. Hi Ken, don't underestimate your skills. I'm the opposite to you, my medium is wood and I love it, to be honest building in plastic fills me with apprehension just like you with wood. I don't think I could achieve any where near the results in plastic you have with your SOTS but one day I'm going to have a go, I'm going to have a go with the Bismarck 1/200 and with this I'll either sink or swim. I have no doubt at all in my mind you would do a fab job with one of these wooden kits and my recommendation would be for you to have a go with the Vic, she is a great build but above all else the instructions are the best I've seen. Give it some consideration and remember, you have all the help and guidance you need from so many first class ship builders on this forum.... .. Keep up the great work Ken, am looking forward to you next little venture.... Regards Alan

Hi this is not the cloth sail I decided to use the vac form ones, and it's a tip I learned from my dad in my teens, that's 40 odd yrs ago, its the sludge from the bottom of the bottle of white spirit I use for cleaning my brushes ( I keep it topped up as I use this on lots of things not just sails) I just get a good brush full of the sludge and scrub it over the Saul both sides, let it dry then with a tissue just wipe from top to bottom of the sail til I get the effect I want. Lots of people say doesn't it harm the vac sail, all I can say is my dad's are fine after more than 40 yrs and I won't be around in 40 yrs time, so I'm not worried what happens after that. Ken's the name modeling's the game.

Hi all here is an update on this one Hi all as a note People keep asking me how I do these sails, well here is a short guide, they are so easy. First you need the white spirit you clean your brushes in ( you know the jar or bottle or whatever that all the sludge builds up in( I keep mine topped up in a little bottle as I use it for other things too) you get your vac formed sails , your brush and your white spirit. then you get a good brushfull of the sludge in the bottom of the bottle and scrub it all over the sail(both sides) allow it to dry and give a second coat if required then with a downwards motion wipe the muck off till you're happy with the effect and there you are, see how easy it is. The Airfix designers of that kit would be proud of you Ken! Looks so 'used and lived in' as a real ship should. And those compound angles on the base corners aren't the easiest things to get right either - I have trouble doing a standard 45 degree!! Well done! Tbh looking at the pics I'm glad he knows nothing about ships as it couldn't look more like a model if I tried, I got carried away by his enthusiasm, it actually looks more plastic than if I hadn't painted it, especially that last pic, what a piece of c$+". I am soooo peeed at myself, allowing myself to get an inflated ego of my models being good. Ken's the name modeling's the game.

Thanks guys well my Rolf took delivery of it today and said it is totally amazing, said he knew it would be good as he had seen the way it was going, but that it was way better than he had expected, he recons it's the framing that finishes it off. Ken's the name modeling's the game.
