Hi Steve,
Thanks for looking, it appears to me that that most of the Merlins engines were painted black with black exhaust the only other colour was the hydraulic pump at the rear which was silver and the air compressor black (as in Tom's build).

UPDATE:SPITFIRE.

ENGINE EXHAUST AND CASTING MARKS.

When looking at the exhaust it appeared to me that I had to remove the casting marks before painting this is how I removed them.

First I had to remove the casting marks, I used a fine file first but had to change to a more courser file to remove the marks.

With the marks removed I first used 400 grade to take the worse of, keeping a steady movement and keeping an eye on the shape I then changed to 600grade.The final stage I used Steel Wool to achieve the finish.

These pictures show the end result.

Regards

Trev.

UPDATE:SPITFIRE.
271015.

SPRAYING ENGINE BLOCK AND EXHAUST MANIFOLDS:

I found looking at the engine parts and exhaust manifolds there seemed very little casting marks to remove so it wasn't long before the first primmer went on, I did feel that the exhaust ports were out of alignment and not all were the same size so I adjusted them to look more the same size, this may be just my castings as pictures will show you, the pictures shown are not the final coats that will follow.

Adjusting exhaust ports.

Cleaning up.

Ready for the first coats.

Masking up to spray Manifolds and ports.

First coat on.

This is the top part of the engine were the exhaust manifolds fit to the sides, there is still masking tape around the boxes which I will remove later.

These are rear parts of the engine ( two-stage supercharger and gearbox)

This picture shows all of the engine parts I have, but not the final coats as yet.

Thank you for looking,

Regards.

Trev.

Steve, thinking about glossing over the black parts as most Spitfire engines were all black?

Thanks for looking.

UPDATE:SPITFIRE.
121015.

ENGINE PARTS.
WING PLATES (UNDER-CARRIAGE)

Here are a few pictures of the engine and wing parts to date, first we look at the valve rockers boxes which sit on top off the cylinder head, I have looked at some pictures of the Merlin engine and it appears to me that it has a tube which run's along the centre of the rocker box, so I thought I would have a go at replicating it.

Also I have moved on with the wing skins around the undercarriage, the main reason I started around this area was that it looked that it could become a bit tricky, and making sure that the wheels retract back under the wing without catching on the plates, but as I work towards the wing tip I know I will have to make one or two of my own plates maybe.

So the first pictures will show how the engine as it looks now, and the following will show the undercarriage.

This shows bending a brass rod and covering with beading cord.

This shows drilling to accept brass rod.

This shows Radiator and supercharger.

This is as far that I have built with the undercarriage.

Regards to all and thank you for looking.

Trev.
