There were fears that this Mk1 Hurricane would be lost to the UK when it was put up for sale but it has now been purchased by a UK-based buyer.

Hawker Hurricane R4118, regarded as one of the most historic WW2 aircraft, is a genuine Battle of Britain veteran. The Mk1 Hurricane is credited with 49 Battle of Britain combat sorties and 5 kills. It is the only Hurricane to take part in the Battle of Britain that is still flying.

R4118 was itself shot down in October 1940 and after repairs returned to service over the North Sea, where it again saw active combat. It was subsequently used as a trainer and rebuilt a further three times following accidents. In December 1943 R4118 was sent to India, still as a trainer, but was not actually unpacked on arrival, eventually being struck off charge in 1947.

R4118 ended up at a university in Varanasi where it was discovered by Peter Vacher in 1982. Some 14 years later, in 1996, Peter made his first bid to buy the Hurricane, which by this time had been disassembled and was in many pieces, still at the university. After negotiations lasting six years, Peter brought it back to the UK where it was renovated by Hawker Restorations in Suffolk to superb flying condition, returning to 1940 specification and appearance.

It is hoped that the buyer will keep the aircraft in the country and that R4118 will continue to be seen at British Airshows.
