Stage 65 – Contains: The seatbelt harness and Data Display sprue

Assembling the seatbelts

Fitting the main buckle
Using a cutter and mat, carefully cut around the two red-outlined BOSS labels from the instrument panel label sheet (Stage 64). Be careful not to cut into the logo’s white border, or to cut into the backing sheet: it should remain intact.
Cut a 13mm length of masking tape and stick it to the hook end of one of the seatbelts A1
Remove the first BOSS logo from the label sheet, and apply it to the middle of the belt, using the tape as a guide to its position.

The ‘B’ of ‘BOSS’ should face the buckle end.
Repeat for the other seatbelt A1, this time with the label positioned so that the ‘S’ of ‘BOSS’ faces the buckle. This will now determine which is the left and which is the right belt.
Test-fit the main buckle onto the main buckle plate, by pushing the pins into the holes.
Separate the parts, dab the spot on the plate with instant adhesive and replace the main buckle. Hold it in place for one minute.
Next, cut two 4mm-long strips from the double-sided tape.
Stick these onto the belts B, with the longer (5mm) edge running lengthways along the fabric, as shown.

Now feed the left belt A2 through the loop at the end of one of the belts C, as shown.
Make sure the belt C is facing the front.
Now pass the same belt A2 through the buckle of the left belt A1 from the back.
Now fold the buckle back to reveal the underside of the belt A2, and place a 5mm x 5mm piece of double-sided tape into the end of it, as shown. This time, remove both bits of backing paper.
Feed the slack through the buckle so that the tape is a little way clear of it, then fold the end over and press it down onto the section of belt to secure it.

Now feed the free end of the belt C through the side buckle plate of one of the belts B. Slide the buckle plate down the entire length of the belt C and beyond its folded-back end.
Using tweezers, remove the remaining backing paper from the double-sided tape fitted previously, then position the belt B as shown in the inset, and press down to secure the belt.
Repeat this step in its entirety for the right-hand seatbelt components.


Attaching the fuel filler valve and gear linkage bearing housing
Prepare the monocoque assembly, the fuel filler valve and housing, and the gear linkage bearing housing (all from Stage 64) for this stage.
Test-fit the two parts of the fuel filler valve, as shown below.
Now test-fit the fuel filler assembly to the monocoque.

Scrape the paint from the indicated section of the fuel filler valve housing.
Similarly, scrape away the paint from the indicated section on the monocoque.
Be careful not to scrape away any of the paint on the surrounding areas.
Apply a little plastic adhesive to the indicated hole in the fuel filler valve housing, then insert the fuel filler valve, as in the test fit, and hold it in place for 2-3 minutes.

Apply some plastic adhesive to the valve housing, on the inside edge of the surface from which you removed the paint, then place it on the monocoque, as in the test fit, and hold in place for 2-3 minutes.
Make sure that no adhesive gets squeezed out from between the two parts.
Next, test-fit the gear linkage bearing housing into the indicated hole in the monocoque.
When happy with the fit, carefully scrape away the paint from the area of the part. Use the unsharpened side of the blade to avoid damage.
Apply some plastic adhesive to the pin on the end of the bearing housing, then fit it back onto the monocoque and hold it in place for 2-3 minutes.
Leave the assembly to one side for at least an hour, for the adhesive to dry.

Stage complete

Stage 66 contains: The steering wheel, some 1x400mm wire and the Seat

Wire B (1) 0.56mm X 300mm)

Wire A (3) 0.9mm X 300mm)


Assembling the electrical system

The steering wheel labels
Prepare the instrument panel label sheet that was used in Stage 65.
Using a cutter and cutting mat, cut out one RADIO (19) and one BOOST (20)
Position the labels as shown below. The RADIO sticker is below the red button on the left, and the BOOST label is under the green button on the right.

Electrical system parts B-1, B-2, B-3, B-4, B-5 and B-6
Lay out electrical system parts B-1, B-2, B-3, B-4, B-5, B-6, from Stage 63.
Test-fit electrical system parts B-1 and B-2 by inserting the pin on part B-2 into the hole in part B-1.
Test-fit electrical system part B-3 to the left-hand side of the assembly.
Now test-fit electrical system part B-4 on the right-hand side.
Apply plastic adhesive to the inside of electrical system part B-1. Combine parts B-1 and B-2 again and hold them together for a couple of minutes.

Apply adhesive to the left-hand side of the assembly and glue electrical system part B-3 into place.
Apply adhesive along the right-hand side and glue electrical system part B-4 into position.
Push the pins of electrical system part B-5 into the corresponding holes in electrical system part B-2. Match the orientation of the coloured circles.
Insert the pins of electrical system part B-6 into the circled holes in part B-2.
Remove electrical system part B-5 and apply plastic adhesive to the areas highlighted below. Glue part B-5 into place on B-2.
Apply adhesive to the outlined areas on electrical system part B-6, and glue it into position on part B-2.


Attaching wire C (2) to the engine block
Prepare the telemetry unit (Stage 63) and the engine block (Stage 64), and the connectors and wire "C" (Stage 57).
Remove the connector from the sprue and cut a 70mm length of wire "C" (.08 X 600mm)
Apply adhesive to one end of the 70mm length of wire "C" and place the long side of the connector onto that end.

Pass the free end of wire "C" along the engine block, running it on top of the cam cover and under the fuel hose, as shown.
Position the connector slightly forward of the existing one
Take the tip of wire "C" and position it behind the alternator belt.
Cut two 50mm lengths of wire "C", one 65mm length and one 75mm length. Apply some adhesive to one end of each, and glue the ends into the projections on the telemetry unit, as shown.

The battery cable, CDI unit, wire "B" (1) (.056 X 300mm) electrical system parts A, wire "A" (3) (.09 X 300mm) and electrical system parts B
Prepare the battery cable (Stage 56), the CDI unit, electrical system part A, wire B, and wire A (all from Stage 63).
Apply plastic adhesive to the end of the battery cable and insert it into the projection on the CDI unit. Hold it in place for about a minute while the glue dries.
Glue the second short end of the battery cable into the second projection on the CDI unit.
Cut two 25mm lengths and one 220mm length of wire "B" (1) and glue one end of each into the projections on electrical system part A, as shown.
Cut two 45mm lengths and two 76mm lengths of wire "A" (3). Apply adhesive to one end of each length, and insert the glued ends into the holes of electrical system part B, as shown.

Stage complete

You have now applied the labels to the steering wheel, wire C to the engine block and the telemetry unit, the battery cable to the CDI unit, and wires B and D to electrical system parts A and B.

Stage 67 contains: The Engine cover, Rear cover and Engine cover labels


Assembling the instrument panel

The instrument panel
For this step, you will need the instrument panel, the data registration buttons, fire extinguisher button, brake balance adjuster, mixture/boost control and, from the switch sprue, the double switch, the radio control switch and the triple switch.
Remove the green and black data registration buttons from their sprue and the three sets of switches from the switch sprue.
Test-fit the double switch in the outlined area on the right side of the instrument panel rear, with the switch levers nearer to the face of the panel.
Apply adhesive to the outlined area on the right side of the instrument panel, and glue the double switch back into position.
Test-fit and glue the triple switch into the instrument panel.
Test-fit the instrument panel front onto the outlined area on the back of the instrument panel rear.
Apply adhesive to the outlined surface on the back of the instrument panel rear and glue the instrument panel front into place.
Test-fit one of the mixture/turbo boost controls in the circled hole on the face of the instrument panel rear.
Apply glue to the projection on the mixture/turbo boost control, and then insert it into the hole in the instrument panel rear.
Test-fit and glue the second mixture/turbo boost control to the point on the left of the instrument panel.
Test-fit and glue the outlined area of the green data registration button into the circled hole in the instrument panel.
Test-fit and glue the black data registration button into the hole in the instrument panel.
Test-fit and glue the fire extinguisher button into the indicated hole on the instrument panel
Test-fit the radio control switch into the part of the instrument panel then apply a little adhesive to the indicated projection and glue the switch into position.
Place the brake balance adjuster label onto the button, as shown.

Fitting the brake balance adjuster

Prepare the monocoque assembly (Stage 65).
Remove the brake balance adjuster from the sprue, and test-fit it into the hole in the cockpit.
Apply adhesive to the back of the brake balance adjuster and glue it into position in the cockpit.
The brake balance adjuster is now fitted to the monocoque.

Fitting the data display and rev counter display
Place the data display and rev counter display (Stage 65) on your cutting mat with their shiny sides down. Remove both parts from the sprue.
Test-fit the rev counter display by inserting it into the recess at the top of the instrument panel.
Apply adhesive to the three points in the instrument panel recess, and fix the rev counter display into position. When the glue is dry, wipe the display clean with a cotton swab.
Test-fit and glue the data display into position, and wipe it clean when the glue is dry.

Stage complete
The instrument panel has its buttons, labels and display fitted, and the brake balance adjuster has been fixed to the monocoque.

Note: The following build sequence will include the references to the (Blue, Red) Circles and Arrows as show in your Magazine for easier understanding with page references of the photo’s where needed do to the complexity of smaller details being added. This is for your convenience.


Stage 68 – Contains:
Radiator outlet blanking panels × 2 ABS
Radiator outlet duct lower (right) ABS
Radiator outlet duct upper (left) A
Radiator outlet duct upper (right) ABS
Radiator outlet duct lower (left) ABS

The electrical system

Connecting wire E to the instrument panel
Prepare the cable tie tape (Stage 55), the electrical system part A, the connector sprue, wire E (Stage 66) and the instrument panel (Stage 67).
Remove one connector from the sprue. Cut two lengths of wire E, one 125mm and one 100mm, then cut three 10mm lengths of cable tie tape.

Apply instant adhesive to the last 3mm of one end of the 125mm length of wire E. Glue into place into the groove on the back of the instrument panel
Apply some instant adhesive to the other end of the 125mm length of wire E. Place the shorter end of the connector onto the end of the wire.

Apply instant adhesive to one end of the 100mm length of wire E, and insert it into the other end of the connector.
Take the free end of cable E and use masking tape to fix it temporarily to the end of the longest cable coming from electrical system part A (blue circle).
Wrap the three lengths of cable tie tape around the two cables at the points indicated by the red arrows.

Fitting the seat, electrical system part A and the instrument panel
You will need the seat (Stage 66), the monocoque assembly, and wire C (Stage 66).

Cut a 200mm length of wire C and apply a small amount of instant adhesive to one end. Insert it into the hole in the throttle cable bracket that you fitted to the Monocoque in step 2 of page 441 in stage 56. Cut two 2 × 5mm pieces of cable tie tape, and use them to fix the 200mm length of wire C to the Monocoque as show in the picture below.

Now align the two holes in the underside of the seat with the two projections on the Monocoque and place the seat into position.
Position the 200mm length of wire C in the cockpit next to the back of the seat, then
pull it forward alongside the seat.
Run wire C along the side of the cockpit, and use four 5mm pieces of cable tie tape to fix it in place.


Now remove the seat, and test-fit the holes in electrical system part A onto the projections
in the cockpit. Pass the two shorter cables through the hole.
Apply instant adhesive to the four location pins on the underside of the electrical system part A, and press into place and Position the two short wires to the side of the underside as shown in the picture on page 558.

Now Test-fit the ridge on the back of the instrument panel into the groove in the monocoque.
Apply plastic adhesive to the area of the groove, and press the instrument panel into place.
Position the wires from the instrument panel and electrical system part A in roughly the same
positions as shown in the picture on page 548.
Put the seat back into place, so that you can move the wires into their correct positions

Fix the two wires coming out from the back of the seat to the monocoque at the four locations
indicated by the yellow arrows, using 7mm lengths of cable tie tape. Bend the thicker wire down, but keep the thinner wire positioned as shown in the picture below.

Fitting electrical system part B, the
CDI unit and the telemetry unit

You will need electrical system part B, the CDI unit and the telemetry unit.

Apply a small amount of instant adhesive to the end of the battery cable attached to the CDI unit.
Locate the area shown in the photo on page 549, on the left at the rear of the monocoque assembly.
Glue the battery cable into the connector. When dry, test-fit the parts of the CDI unit onto those on the monocoque.
Apply a small amount of instant adhesive to the two points, and press the CDI unit
into position.
Place the end of the battery cableunderneath the CDI unit, as shown below.

Position the longest wire from the telemetry unit under the cable, then align the two
points at the sides between the two highlighted ridges on the monocoque.
Match the numbered corners to make sure you have the unit the right way round.


Bring wires 1 and 2 together, and pass them down the side of the telemetry unit, along with wire 3, as shown below. Fix the cables with 15mm lengths of cable tie tape at the four locations show in the photo on page 549.
Test-fit the two projections of electrical system part B into the two holes in the monocoque.
Apply plastic adhesive to the raised points on electrical system part B, and glue it into place.

Cross the two front wires of electrical system part B, and position them so that they are pointing backwards.

Assembling the body cover
You will need the rear cover, engine cover and decals from Stage 67.
Test-fit the rear cover to the engine cover, as shown.Then cut four 5cm lengths of masking tape.

Apply plastic adhesive to the highlighted areas on the engine cover. Fit the rear cover and engine cover together again, and hold them in place with two of the lengths of masking tape (inset).
Apply the remaining two lengths of masking tape to the sides of the covers, and hold the parts together for a few minutes.
Test-fit the cockpit cover and the engine cover together. Then cut two more 5cm lengths of masking tape.

Now apply plastic adhesive to the raised areas at the front of the engine cover, on each side of it, then fit the cockpit cover back into position. Stick masking tape over the two joins to hold the parts together.
Test-fit the gearbox oil cooler duct onto the highlighted ridges of the rear cover. Then cut a
strip of masking tape roughly 10cm long.
Apply plastic adhesive to the outlined areas on the gearbox oil cooler duct, and fix it into place on the rear cover.
Place the 10cm strip of masking tape over the duct, as shown. Leave the adhesive to dry for about an hour, and then peel off all of the masking tape.

Cut one engine cover label B (numbered 23) from the sheet. Peel away the backing paper from the curved end, and apply the label to the left side of the cover, starting at the back. Work along the bottom edge to the end, then trim off any excess.
In the same way, apply an engine cover label B (number 24), to the right side of the engine cover.
When you are finished, pierce through the six mounting holes that the labels are covering.

Remove engine cover labels A (21) and (22) from the sheet and apply at the front and rear of the main body cover, respectively.

Fitting the outlet ducts
Prepare the radiator outlet duct parts from Stage 68.
Test-fit the outlet duct upper (left) into the outlined part of the outlet duct lower (left). Cut two 3cm lengths of masking tape.
Apply plastic adhesive to the outlined area of the outlet duct lower (left), and fit the parts together again.

Place the 3cm lengths of masking tape over the duct assemblies, as shown. Leave the parts for about an hour or until the glue has completely dried, then remove the masking tape.
Align the yellow lines of the left outlet duct with the blue lines on the underside of the engine cover.
Apply plastic adhesive to the outlined areas of the left outlet duct, and fix it onto the engine cover.
Make sure there is no gap between the two parts.

Repeat the whole procedure to fix the right outlet duct to the engine cover.

Making and fitting the mirrors
Remove part 28 from the plate label sheet, and fix it to the raised area in the centre of the tail light. Fix a mirror label to each of the mirrors.
Apply instant adhesive to the two highlighted mounting positions in the left mirror housing, and place one of the mirrors into it. Hold it in place while the adhesive dries, using a cotton swab.
Locate the circled recess in the left side of the engine cover. Place the left mirror housing into the hole, as shown, to confirm the position and fit.

Apply instant adhesive to the end of the left mirror housing’s arm, and fit it back into the hole in the left side of the engine cover.
Repeat this process to fit the right mirror housing to the right side of the engine cover.

Fitting the kill switch
Locate the groove in the rear rollhoop upper (arrowed), and place the kill
switch into it, to confirm the position.

Apply instant adhesive to side of the kill switch that fits into the groove, and press it into place in the rear rollhoop. Hold it there for about 1 minute.
Make sure that the angle of the kill switch matches that of the one in the photograph on page 553 of step 4.

“Completion of the model”

The labels and decals
Remove two number 25 labels from the plate label sheet from Stage 69, and apply them to the
turbochargers on the engine block at the points shown in the photos.

Remove a label numbered 26 or 27 from the plate label sheet. Label 26 is a replica of the plate on chassis number MP4/4-2, which Senna drove in the Japanese GP. Label 27 is a replica of the plate on chassis MP4/4-5, the car that he used in practice. Use whichever one you prefer.

Apply the label to the back of the seat, aligned centrally and positioned between the seatbelt mounting holes.
Test-fit the projections of the rear rollhoop (Stage 69) into the corresponding grooves in the rear rollhoop lower (right)
Apply instant adhesive to the outlined parts of the projections on the rear rollhoop, and fit it onto the rear rollhoop lower (right). Hold the parts together for about one minute.
Use the same method to fix the rear rollhoop lower (left) onto the left side of the rear rollhoop.

Locate the outlined areas towards the rear of the monocoque. These are where the rear rollhoop will be fitted.
Apply instant adhesive to the outlined areas at the bottom of the rear rollhoop, and fit it into position on the monocoque. Hold it in place for about a minute while the glue dries.


Fitting the Bodywork Decals
NOTE: The body decals have a protective film covering the decals that must not be removed until the decal has been fitted to the bodywork as described below. Carefully cut around the dotted lines as explained submerging all of the decal including the protective film.


Remove decal 29 from the sheet, including the dotted lines and the number. Immerse it in water for around two minutes.
Remove the decal from the water, and peel it away from its backing. Place onto the left side of the bodywork, as shown below.

Gently squeeze out any air bubbles trapped underneath the decal. Be careful not to crease it or move it out of position when doing this.
Remove decal 31, including the dotted lines and the number. Soak it in water, apply it to the left side of the bodywork, as shown below, and squeeze out any trapped air bubbles.

Remove decals 30 and 32 from the sheet and apply them to the right side of the bodywork, using the same method you did for decals 29 and 31. Leave for about six hours to dry completely, then remove the protective film with the dotted lines and numbers from all four decals you have applied.

Take extra care when handling the bodywork once the decals have been applied, because they can be easily damaged.
Now place one of the radiator outlet blanking panels (Stage 68) into the hole next to the left radiator outlet duct.
Apply some plastic adhesive to the blanking panel, and fix it into place. Allow the glue to dry for about three minutes, and then fit the second panel into the right radiator outlet duct.
The panels should fit flush against the engine cover.

Apply a 5mm strip of double-sided tape (Stage 65) to the front of the cockpit cover (blue arrow), then remove the backing paper. Fix the windscreen into place here.
Remove eight of the top body washers from the sprue, by cutting along the red lines). Insert a screw T into each of the washers.

Test-fit the tail light lens onto the raised part in the centre of the tail light (Stage 69).
Apply a small amount of instant adhesive to the out edge on the tail light lens and fit it onto the tail light again.

Pass the nylon line (Stage 66) along the side of the gearbox (Stage 55), routing it through or under the parts indicated by the dotted lines. Cut two 15mm lengths and two 20mm lengths of cable tie tape (Stage 68).
Wrap the two 15mm lengths around the cables at the blue-arrowed points, and the two 20mm lengths at the yellow-arrowed points as shown in the picture on page 556 of your magazine.

The cable ties at the blue arrows wrap around two wires and two hoses; the cable ties at the yellow arrows wrap around three wires and three hoses as shown on page 556.

You have now been supplied with two sets of aerials hard ones with this stage, and soft ones with Stage 56. It is your choice which ones to use, but the soft aerials are less likely to get damaged.
Remove your chosen aerials from their sprue, and apply a small amount of instant adhesive to the bottom of each one. Insert the aerials into the left and right holes (circled) in the fuel filter cover panel.
Test-fit the projections on the fuel filter cover panel (yellow arrows) into the two circled holes below the rear rollhoop.
Apply some instant adhesive to the holes in the monocoque, and insert the projections on the underside of the fuel filter cover panel into them.

Cut two 10 × 5mm strips of double-sided tape and stick them to the ends of the middle seatbelts (red arrows). Cut two 10 × 3mm strips and apply them to the ends of the two lower belts (blue arrows).
Remove the seat from the cockpit. Pass the taped belt ends through the holes in the seat (red arrows), then remove the backing from the tape and stick the belts to the underside of the seat, as shown below right.

Remove the four air valves from their sprue by cutting along the red lines.
Apply instant adhesive to the end of each air valve (arrowed), and insert them into the corresponding holes in all four of the wheels.


Combining the parts
Turn the gearbox over and remove the two screws J, circled in red.
Take the engine block and place it at the front of the gearbox. Pass the cable from the gearbox into the front of the engine.

Insert a screw F into the red circled hole in the gearbox, and tighten it with an Allen key. Stop tightening the screw when the head comes into contact with the gearbox.
Replace the two screws J back in the circled holes in the gearbox underside and tighten them.
Take the free end of the oil hose indicated by the blue arrow, and fit it onto the blue projection on the oil cooler.

Insert the free end of the other oil hose onto the projection on the engine block.
Position the ends of the throttle body between the intercooler pipes, and engage the lower intercooler pipes with the left and right turbochargers.
Connect the three hoses extending from the monocoque to the three connectors on the engine block.
Cut the length of each hose to line up with the middle of the connector.
Fit the engine mount plates back into position, and secure them with two screws L and two screws K.
Tighten two screws H into the red-circled holes in the monocoque. Insert a screw F into the hole, and tighten with an Allen key.
Take hose B from the gearbox and pass it along the side of the engine, following the yellow line, and insert it into the monocoque (red arrow). The hose should be passed behind the manifolds.

Place the monocoque bottom plate onto the underside of the monocoque, and fix it in place
with a screw J. Then place the front underbody into place and secure it with screws N (yellow circles) and screws P (red circles).
Mount the gear linkage to the monocoque and gearbox – refer to Stage 34 in Pack 10 for instructions on how to do this.
Place the underbody panels into position and secure them with four screws J (red circles), five screws G (yellow and green circles) and two screws J (blue circles).

Place the two air intakes into position on either side of the engine. Then connect the hose to the wastegate (red arrow).


Place the main bodywork onto the assembly, taking care not to damage the aerials (red arrow).
Match the left and right of the rear of the main bodywork with the body sections around the rear suspension (yellow arrow). The raised section fits over the oil cooler (blue arrow), and is secured with a screw T (yellow circle) on each side. Secure the main bodywork to the underbody panel with screws T (blue circles) on each side, and fix the left and right sides of the front end with a screw T (green circle) on each side.

Place the front wing onto the nose of the monocoque. Secure the sides with two screws A (blue circles), and the centre with one screw J (red circle).
Align the holes at the bottom of the rear wing stays (red circles) with the projections at the rear of the gearbox (yellow circles). The tips at the bottom of the wing sides should fit into the underbody panel.
Tighten a screw N into the hole circled in red. Insert the tail light into the gap between the rear wing stays, and then tighten a screw J into the hole circled in yellow. Tighten two screws N into the holes circled in blue.

Fit the seat back into the cockpit and insert the left and right seatbelt hooks into the holes (arrowed).
Fit the steering wheel onto the end of the steering column.
Take the four wheels collected throughout the series and fit them into place on the axles. This is a static display model, so you can tighten the wheel nuts fully– the wheels don’t need to be free to turn.
