thomasmoult wrote:Try my method; get a thermo flask, fill it with hot water boiled straight from the kettle, then drop the plank in. The hotter the water the better, and the plank need only be in there for less than a minute. Take it out and immediately offer it up to the hull and bend it round the required bow area; it will bend, hold the shape and because the water is so hot, it dries before you can fix the pins in.
Works a treat for me, no need for plank benders etc just a trusty flask and a kettle!
Tom i tried this today on the bow worked a treat and the super glue did dry instantly on wet planks cheers benny

Thanks for all your replies, bending them aint going to be a problem, Soldering Iron with a roller on the end! (cheaper than a lecky plank bender). Time to start sanding the ribs down to get the shape right, so catch you all later. For those with electric plank benders you can buy a euro plug adapter from maplins that screws over 2 pin plug and converts it to gb three pin. Current builds.Hachettes build the bismark,HMS Victory, HMS Hood. Finished Builds Corel HMS Victory cross section.

lol dont do what my old man did with fridge/freezer several years ago.
he took the plug off it, put the wires in the socket and added another plug into the socket ontop of the wires.
when i had to unplug it was really confused and got shock lol.
and that was from a "qualified electritian"! im a better lecky than him and havent had any training! would NEVER do anything as stupid as that.
instead i just add the correct extension socket cable lol

Years ago it was not mandatory to sell elec items with a plug top on them. It is now. I was 5 and got a globe with lamp in it for xmas, no plug top. No-one up at 5am but me(xmas day). I climbed behind the settee and unplugged the xmas dec lights and proceeded to wind the tail ends of the globe's lead to the pins on the plug top. Then i plugged it in. Thinking i was well smart. BANG. Everything went off. The plug top melted and 'arc-ed' out to the settee, setting it on fire. My dad thanked the smoke alarm, for saving Xmas. Talk about chastise. My back side is still sore. Got 2 belts that day! Now im a spark myself. My family wont ever let me forget. i dont know what weapons will be used in ww3 but ww4 will be sticks and stones.

Cant see what all the fuss is about adaptors, cut the euro plug off and fit a BS 3 pin english one, so your left with two wires! Red or brown to live pin and blue or black to neutral pin. Leave earth pin in situ. Put in a fuse to suit (look at old plug for size, I should think 3amp). DISCLAIMER: UNPLUG IT FROM THE WALL FIRST! IF IN DOUBT CONTACT, A QUALYFIED ELECTRICIAN WHO LIKE MYSELF WILL HAVE NO QUARMS ABOUT CHARGING YOU A £## CALL OUT FEE FOR THE PLEASURE. I TAKE NO RESPONSABILTY IF YOU DO THIS. Thanks for looking! Thanks for looking! problem is though, and this is NOT directed at anyone on this forum, just lifes simple facts, there are people in this world who despite it being moulded onto most plugs and printed on the plugs card, fail to know which pin is live, earth, nuetral. and there are those who will turn the plug over read to put the wire in the left pin, turn it over (so the left pin becomes the right) and still puts it into the left (but which was right) pin. it is because of this fact and people being killed becaused of it all uk appliances MUST now come fitted with a plug. please remember thats NOT AIEMD AT ANYONE HERE>

Hi Shipmates! Wiring a British 3 pin plug. The Live(Brown) wire always has the fuse connected to it's pin, Neutral wire (Blue) is on the opposite side of the plug and the Earth wire (Green & Yellow) on the long pin at the top. If you don't have a 3rd wire, don't worry! the item doesn't need it!. Simple rhyme from my school day :- Brown is Live, Blue is Not, Green and Yellow Earths the Lot. Darron

Hi Shipmates I loved the 'Mr. Bean' episode, where he had just bought a new television and after a moments musing he proceeded to push the wires into the plug through the entry hole at the bottom. Just from memory, I believe the tv worked. Know this was a comedy sketch, but this is something that really SHOULD NOT, NEVER, NO WAY, be attempted at home. Happy building Daffy09

Darron Hi Darron I remember that rhyme as well, The only thing is that untill someone has actually done it, then end up looking at Red & Black Wires!(Red is L Black is N)the rhyme wont work! lol Moulded plugs were introduced only becuase of trading standards look here to read all about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BS_1363

Sorry your wrong an appliance does not have to have a plug fitted if it is intended to be fixed ie cooker, fridge, heaters etc. And you can still buy lamps etc from major retailers where a normal white non moulded plug is fitted. Hi guys. In the past, I have soaked planks in tap water over 2 hours (the water cools anyway), sometimes longer; in an upright Spagehetti glass - about 2 foot tall. The supplied planks I used doing HMS Victory, Constructo - 1/92 model, were Hardwood not soft, 2mm thick and ba****ds to champher, but easy to bend under the right conditions. I found the right conditions to be: 1. Plenty of soaking. 2. Plenty of heat. 3. Plenty of wrist action!! Back to bending planks! A flat headed soldering iron was perfect. You dont need a round headed expensive 'Plank bender', or a fancy curved Henry Moore sculpture to do it on. A soft piece of wood, a movable heat source, a hard surface to resist the next bit; a wrist which will either move the heat around and over the nice soft plank, or a nice soft plank which you can move over a heat source (the way it was done many years ago when they built the real things). The soldering Iron was ideal when dealing with bends which where not on one plane. I will try and dig out some old photo's to give an idea, but tend to think that the likes of Karl and Mike T may have some to hand. Either way Lad's, enjoy your new found hobby of bending See Ya.
