Pack 29 contains Stages 111 - 114

Stage 111 - Contains Tailfin plates 1, Rudder plates 2, Pin-nails and a Template.

Retrieve the tailfin frame from Stage 32 and smooth it with sandpaper.

Retrieve the tailfin leading edge from Stage 105 and put it up against the leading edge of tailfin frame. The leading edge has internal reinforcements that help position onto the tailfin.

Mark out and cut slots in the tailfin that correspond to the reinforcements. Use a fine flat file to cut the slots the tailfin frame to suit the leading leading edge.

Fit the leading edge on the tailfin, then push the tailfin into the tail of the fuselage to check that it fits. When in place, the fin edge should be approximately 1mm above the top of the fuselage. If necessary, file down the lower edge of the tailfin to bring it to the correct level.

Now take the Take the stabilisers and the edges that were provided with Stages 33, 34 and 105.

Mark, cut and file the slots, in the same way as the tailfin, so that the edges fit. Then glue the leading edges to the tailfin and the horizontal stabilisers. Then glue the stabilisers onto each side of the fin at a 90° angle. Make sure that the ends of the leading edges are flush with the ends of the fin and stabilisers.

Take 2x5mm wooden strips provided in previous stages. Cut them to size and glue them onto the stabilisers, as shown in the Step 6 photo. Do the same on the underside of the stabilisers. Remember that the pieces should be symmetrical, so do the same on each side of the tailfin.

Now glue wooden strips onto both sides of the tailfin. The strips will support the plates when they are put in place.

Take the tail plate from Stage 110, and position it on the stabiliser, as shown in the Step 8 photo. With a pencil, draw along the inside edge of the plate on the stabiliser. Then remove the plate and glue a wooden strip along the pencil line just made. This strip will support the plate.

Repeat on the stabiliser on the opposite side, and on the underside of both.

When the glue has fully dried, sand/file down the wooden strips where they meet the leading edges of the stabiliser and tailfin. When the plate is put in place, it should be level with the leading edge.

This completes this stage, carefully store the remaining parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 112 - Contains Tail plates 2, 3 & 4, Pin-nails, 2x5mm wooden strips and a template.

Take the tail rudder from Stage 40 and the trailing edges from Stages 105, 106 and 107.

As in Stage 111, cut and file the slots and glue the edges to the rudder. Then cut out the piece of rudder shown in the step 1 photo, once the edges are glued and dry.

Cut 2x5mm wooden strips and glue them on both sides of the rudder, at the points indicated in the Step 2 photo.

Use a small drill bit and round needle file to carefully cut a circular hole at the front of the rudder to allow the red rudder LED to pass through the hole. Note: Before making the hole, you should look ahead to Stage 114 with regard to the positioning of the rudder hinges in the rudder, so that you can determine a good position of where to cut the LED hole.
Temporarily fit the LED through the hole and fit the LED into the hole rudder trailing edge, ensure the LED is flush with the trailing edge.
Then remove the LED and keep it safe, (you will later need to pull the LED through the rudder as you did with the wing tip LED's).

Retrieve the two plates for the rudder and the template that came with Stage 111. Score the lines following the template, and remember that the two pieces must be symmetrical.

File all the wooden strips reinforcing the rudder so that they are level with the trailing edge. Then glue one of the plates from the previous step onto each side of the rudder and finish the edges with a fine file. Pay particular attention to ensure that the top edge is straight.

Place the fuselage on a flat surface so that it is steady and level. Take the tail assembly made in the previous stage and place it on the fuselage. Make sure it is properly aligned, level and centred, and when happy with its fit, glue the tail assembly in place, again ensuring that it is properly aligned, level and centred.

Cut small wood strips and glue them in place to support the fin and the rear stabilisers. Make sure all the strips are level with a file or sandpaper. Then sand the back of the fin and the fuselage to ensure they are the same thickness.

Retrieve the tailfin plates and template from Stage 111. Following the temlate, score the lines and rivet lines onto both plates, making sure they are symmetrical, then apply glue and fit them in place.

Put the rudder in place against the tail to see how these two pieces fit together. There should be a smooth curve a long the leading edge.

This stage is complete. Carefully store the rudder and any remaining parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 113 - Contains Cylinder head covers, ID paint masks, Spider nuts and 2x5mm Wooden strips.

Retrieve the wooden fret that came with Stage 42. This will form the rear of the pilot’s seat.

Remove the parts and sand the edges smooth, then assemble and glue them as in the Step 1 photo.

Take the cockpit floor and the joystick from Stages 35 and 41. Sand any burrs, then check that the joystick fits into the hole in the floor, as shown in the Step 2 photo. Do not glue it in place just yet.

If you are painting your model, apply a thin, even coat of primer on the parts from Steps 1 and 2. Also apply primer to the inside panels of the cockpit and the engine wiring panel. Put them to one side to dry.
If you are not painting your model, go straight to Stage 114.

When they are completely dry, take the inside panels of the cockpit and paint them matt green (RAL 6003 or Humbrol 78). Apply light coats and allow time to fully dry. Then highlight the details in black, red and grey, as shown in the Step 4 photo.

Take the engine wiring panel and paint in grey (RAL 7016 or Humbrol 32). Then highlight the elements shown in Step 5 with matt green, black, red and yellow paint.

Retrieve the engine block that was painted in Stage 105. Use a fine brush to highlight the cables with yellow and red paint, (or grind-off the diecast cables and replace with real cables).

Take the cylinder head covers and paint them silver. Then glue them in place on the engine block.

Paint the cockpit floor and seat rear grey, and the joystick matt green. Highlight the joystick cables in black and handle in yellow.

Retrieve the pilot’s seat and glue it to the seat rear painted earlier.

Retrieve the brass instrument back panel from Stage 1 and instrument dial panel from Stage 87. Paint the metal pieces black and matt green, with the rudder pedals in silver. Then cut out the instrument dial panel and glue it carefully onto the rear side of the metal instrrument panel. Whe the glue is dry, paint each of the dials with glear gloss to resemble glass bezels.

This completes this stage. Carefully store the assembled items and any remainig parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 114 - Contains Tail plates 2,3 & 4, Roundel paint masks and a Template.

Retrieve the tailplane elevators from Stages 35 and 36, and the trailing edges from Stages 106 and 107.

As before, cut the slots in the leading edges to suit the leading edges, then glue the leading edges in place.

Cut and glue 2x5mm wooden strips on both sides of the elevator, as shown in Step 1.

Retrieve the elevator plates and template provided with Stages 108, 110, 112 and 114 . Follow the template to score the lines onto the plates Each elevator needs two plates, topside and underside. Ensure that you identify the correct side of each plate to be line marked before doing so.

Sand/file down the reinforcing strips on the elvators, as with previous pieces, to ensure that the plates go on evenly. then glue the plates to both sides of both the elevators. Then paint any exposed wooden edges with aluminium paint.

Using the same method as used for the ailerons, use a knife to make the slots for the hinges of the rudder and both elevators, following Steps 4- 9.
The hinges should be glued into the rudder and elevators, but do not glue the rudder or elevator hinges into the tail assembly - Only test fit the rudder and elevators at this point and leave in place unglued.

This completes the assembly of Pack 29. Carefully store the remianing parts in a labelled bag.

Pack 30 contains Stages 115-118

Stage 115 - Contains fuselage plates 2, 4, 5 & 8 and a template.

Carefully sand all over the fuselage using a sanding block. To check that the sanding is even, place a spare skin panel on the fuselage to make sure that it sits flat without any lumps or bumps beneath.

Take 3x3mm strips from previous stages and cut pieces to length to fill the space behind the cockpit and glue them in place. When the glue is dry, carefully sand/shape the ends with the edge of the fuselage framework.

Retrieve fuselage plate 4 from Stage 115, plate 19 from Stage 102, plate 12 from Stage 100, and plates 13, 14 and 18 from Stage 101. These plates make up the right side of the fuselage.

Follow the templates to apply rivet line detail to each of the plates. Lightly abrade the plates on their inner sides so they will adhere better.
Start by gluing the two plates shown in Step 4 onto the fuselage. Then fit pin-nails at the points indicated. Use a file or fine sanding block to smooth the outer edges shown by (dotted lines) in the Step 4 photo.

Apply glue and attach fuselage plate 13 behind plate 12, then fit the pin-nails at the locations indicated, but first test-fitting the pins in the holes and cutting off any excess which protrudes on the inside of the fuselage, then glue the pins in place.

Place fuselage plate 19 against the top of fuselage plate 13, matching the central groove with the rear wall of the cockpit. Use a pen to mark the fold lines of the plate. Cut the plate at the height of the area behind the cockpit (indicated by the dotted line in Step 7). Glue the plate in place. When the glue is dry, fit a pin-nail into the bottom corners. Then neatly fold/glue the forward part of the plate over, and glue it inside the cockpit.

Now glue fuselage plate 18, forward of plate 13. Neatly fold the top over into the cockpit, as with plate 13, and glue in place. Fit a pin-nail into the bottom corners.

Shape fuselage plate 14 around a cylindrical object so that it matches the curvature of the fuselage (see inset picture of Step 9). Position the plate on the body to check that it fits, then glue and fit 3 pin-nails in the positions indicated.
Now test-fit the full wing beneath the fuselage to check that both pieces fit together. Plate 14 fitted earlier) must align with the other body plates on the wing, as shown by the dotted line in Step 10 of the instructions.

This completes this Stage, carefully store the remaining parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 116 - Contains fuselage plates 2, 4, 5 & 8 and a template.

Retrive plate 4 (Stage 115), plate 11 (Stage 104), plate 12 (Stage 89), plates 13, 14 and 18 (Stage 99) and plates 15 and 17 (Stage 102).
Follow the templates to apply rivet line detail to each of the plates. Lightly abrade the plates on their inner sides so they will adhere better. Abrade the plates on their inner sides so they will adhere better.

Glue plate 4 onto the left side of the fuselage, and fit pin-nails in the same way as the corresponding plate on the right fuselage side, then smooth the edges.

Check that plates 12 and 13 fit in place and line up on the fuselage. Glue the plates in place and fit pin-nails in the same way as the corresponding plates on the right fuselage side.

Use a razor saw to cut away the wooden strip between the dotted lines which spans the cockpit door/access area as shown in the Step 4 photo, then sand the cut ends smooth.

Place plate 6 in position, mark where the area behind the cockpit corresponds to on the plate. Cut off the excess, then glue the plate in place and fit a pin-nail into both bottom corners.

Take fuselage plate 17, glue it in place and fit a pin-nail into both bottom corners. When the glue is fully set, neatly fold/ over the top edge over the cockpit door edge and glue in place.

Fit fuselage plate 18 in place, as shown in Step 8, then fold the top edge over the cockpit edge and glue in place. then fit a pin-nail into both bottom corners.

Bend fuselage plate 14 around a cylindrical object to give the curvature shown in Step 9. After test-fitting, glue the plate in place and fit the three pin-nails as before.

Bend plate 11 around a cylindrical object so that it matches the curve of the top of the fuselage. After checking the fit, glue the plate in place and fit a pin-nail into each of the four bottom corners.

This completes Stage 116, carefully store the remaining plates in a labelled bag.

Stage 117 - Contains roundel paint mask templates 1 & 2 and an air intake cover.

Cut and glue lengths of 3x3mm wooden strip to fit in the spaces in engine cover frame as shown in Step 1. Then sand the peices to an even shape.

Take fuselage plate 1 from Stage 86. Bend it around a cylinder to fit the curve of the engine cover. Abrade the inside of the plate and glue in place.

Retrieve the two engine cover plates provided with Stages 115 and 116, and bend each to fit the corner curve of the engine cover. Abrade the inside of the pieces and glue into place.

Place the engine cover onto the engine bay to ensure that the two pieces fit perfectly. Then apply glue to the framework on the inside of the engine cover to strengthen the join between the framework and the engine cover plates.

Retrieve the clear tube length supplied with Stage 35 and insert one end into the left hole near the floor of the cockpit, as shown in Step 6. Pull the tube through the fuselage towards the hole on the tail, then glue it at both ends and cut off the excess tube flush with the end of the tail.

Retrieve the clear tube from Stage 36 and insert it into the second hole near the floor of the cockpit, level with the other tube. Bring the tube to the top of the fuselage and make a hole in the wooden strip at the distance indicated (42mm). Glue the tube in place at both ends and cut off the excess, (keep the excess to one side).

Use a small round file to make a shallow slot in the bottom of the frame, as shown in Step 9. Insert the remaining tube in the third hole in the frame and feed the tube down to the slot just made. Glue both ends into place.

This completes Stage 117, carefully store the remaining parts in a labelled bag.

Stage 118 - Contains cockpit canopy front frame and cockpit closing mechanism.

Retrieve fuselage plates 20 (Stage 102), plate 16 (Stage 104), plates 8 (Stages 99 and 101), plates 6 (Stages 89 and 100) and plate 3 (Stage 72).

Following the templates, add the rivet line detail to each skin panel, keeping both fuselage sides symmetrical, (take great care when scoring each plate that you are scoring correct side of each plate in respect of the plate being for the right or left side of the fuselage).

Take fuselage plate 3 and bend it into shape to fit the top of the fuselage just behind the cockpit. Place the plate onto the fuselage and, with a pen, mark where the end of the clear tube emerges from the fuselage.

Carefully make a perect hole in the plate corresponding with the mark (large arrow) of sufficient snug size to accommodate the diameter of an LED from the lighting kit (approx 2.97 mm).
Glue the plate in place, then fit pin-nails in the corners of the plate and at the points indicated by the small arrows in Step 4.

Sand, glue and pin-nail fuselage plate 6 on the side of the aircraft. Its position is shown by the dotted lines in the Step 5 photo.

Hold plate 8 against the side of the fuselage under plate 6, in the position shown in the Step 6 photo. Draw a line with a marker to show where the plate overlaps the bottom of the fuselage. Then cut-off this section of plate and abrade the back of the plate which is to be glued onto the fuselage. Glue and pin-nail it in place, level with the other pieces.

Carefully test-fit, shape and rivet mark a plate 20 to fit towards the rear of the fairing on the lft side of the fuselage, abrade the inside surface then glue and pin-nail into position.
Then fit a second palte 20 traling fairing on the right-hand side of the fuselage. Ensure that both sides are symmetrical.

Remember that you have spare plates if you need to make any replacements.

Take fuselage plate 16 and glue it to the arch of the canopy frame, as shown in Step 16.

This completes the assembly of Pack 30. Carefully store any remaining parts in a labelled bag.

In the Pack 31 isntructions, we complete: the fuselage skins, fit the tail skins, fit the wing mounts onto the wing, complete the underside wing skins, inboard wing flaps & wing bulges, fit the wing hatch covers, fit the undercarriage Servo and associated assembly, fit the cockpit door, and fit the slide frame for the cockpit canopy.
