Planks splitting Options

Location: Waterlooville, Portsmouth. The home of HMS Victory.
Following instructions carefully I inserted the pins at an angle at the plank ends to prevent splitting. Alas they still split. A bit of help on this one would be very much appreciated.

When dry fitting the plank ,mark the position where the pin will go and drill a small pilot hole at an angle.
