BUILD UPDATE

Hello my friends and fellow builders.
It is with regret that I have to tell you that work on the U-96 u boat is coming to an end.
A situation has arisen which means that I can't work on it any more and I'm having to cancel my subscription to this build.
I do not have a workshop, or a separate room where I can work, so I have to use a space in our living room, a situation which my partner has not been happy with for quite a while now, and things came to a head yesterday.
She cannot cope with the particles in the air from all the sanding and filing that has been going on with this build, particularly as the materials concerned (plastic and MDF) are hazardous to her health, not to mention the fumes from the paint and cleaner that I use.
So, in the interests of her health and happiness, I have decided to cease work on this build and cancel my subscription.
I have enjoyed working on the U-96, it has given me great happiness and satisfaction but I can see no way a round this. I have enjoyed interacting with you all and the feedback and comments I have received have been very much appriciated and have given my confidence a boost. I shall continue to stay around on this forum and follow the builds, paticularly Pemberg, DaDokta and Riff-raff who are still hard at it with U-96 and I wish them all well and happy building.
As a footnote, if anyone on here is interested in taking this build on, I shall be happy to hear from them and I will do my best to get it all delivered. If you are interested, let me know. I shall not ask for any money for it (it has never been about the expense for me, just the enjoyment and challenges of the build).
I hope somewhere out there is someone will be glad to take this one on if they missed it at the start - it would be a sad day for me if I had to 'bin' it, that would be a great shame.
Happy building
David
PS. If anyone can offer a solution to my problem so that I can carry on building the U96, I would be more than happy to it.

Hi David, this really is sad to hear as I and many others am sure have been enjoying your build tremendously. I do hope you will continue to look in on the forum and provide your input to the various posts being submitted, your contributions to date have been very informative and very enjoyable to read. Am sure someone will take you up on your kind offer to continue the kit and am just sorry I cannot offer a solution to your predicament. I hope it all works out for you and wish you the very best for the future, I think we're going to miss your regular updates. Cool Cool Cool

Gandale, Pemberg and davetwin,
Thanks for your kind words, and I'm definitely staying with the forum to follow the progress of the builds taking shape here so I'm not disappearing completely and I really hope that somebody would like to take this build on as it would be heartbreaking to have to end up taking it to the tip.
Happy building all
David

Hi David, before taking the final step to end this, it is worth noting that the rest of the build consists of either plastic, resin or etch brass parts (no dust) and I'm sure the final sanding and painting of the hull could be done outside on a good day - just a thought.

I mirror what Phil has said David, I would care on with the collection and continue to store the parts until you find a way around this situation. It would be a shame to give up now after all your hard work. Cool

Hi Daffy09,
I have really enjoyed watching this build and I am sorry you have to stop.Is there a local modeling club? Maybe you could join it and work on the model at the clubs meeting place or maybe you could ask a local boy scout group if they would be interested in helping you finish it as a project.

I have been on the receiving end of the wrath of SWMBO for dust etc... so I understand your pain.

Good luck

Hi David, i am really sorry to hear about your predicaments but like you say, some things are more important than our hobbies and pastimes. Its a shame you can't find a small shed to work in. keep looking in mate and all the best.

just catching up on this and fully understand your problem. it would be sad for us all to lose your build.

couple of suggestions.

one you could mothball the build until the summer when you could pick up the sanding jobs outside. continue the subscription and build up other sub assembly work as best you can until your able to bring it back in.

you could relocate the build to the garage of a friend or family to work on periodically (like i do with my RC king tiger)

you could find a local model club, you could join and potentially base the build at the club?

just thoughts, hope you find a solution matey

Yes! I agree with Jase, don't give up David, if you do how will I have a reference to follow when I start my U-96 which I'm storing the parts for! Crying

Well, what's a chap to do then?
I want to thank you all for your kind words and encouragement, so this is what I'm going to do.
I've bubble wrapped the hull and carefully packed away all the resin pieces and parts which came with the various issues.
I'm going to re-open my subscription and store all the parts as I receive them each month and re-commence the build in the coming summer when, as has been suggested, I can move outside and work on our covered patio where the dust and fumes hopefully can't affect my partner, whose health is more important than any model.
A special word of thanks to Jase, Silent running, Riff-raff, arpurchase, and the many others who have helped me to come to this decision.
I'll leave this build diary up and running so I can return to it when I finally re-start the project.
Until then, happy building
David
