Well, the first layer of planks is finally done! I think my planking skills improved a bit between the beginning and the end, and a few good lessons were learned along the way. Overall, I think it turned out well, if not quite beautiful. Cutting the holes for the gun ports was a bigger challenge than I anticipated. Drilling a hole and then cutting the bamboo with a craft knife was difficult at best. I tried using a Dremel with a small cutting bit to make the rough opening. It probably would have worked better if my skill with the thing was a little higher. In the end, I think they turned out symmetrical enough that it will be hard to tell that a few of them are slightly larger than the others. I also made a mistake drawing one of the lines to mark where the ribs were. As a result, the lowest rearmost portal on one side ended up intersecting a rib. I debated repairing it and cutting a new hole. But, now I think I will just have that portal closed. It's a little too far aft, but I'm hoping it will be hard for anyone to tell. Plus, I started on the side that I didn't intend to display (for just this sort of reason), so it won't normally be visible at all once I'm finished... :P Live and learn. Oh, and one other big lesson from this phase of the build. Do your sanding outside. Lord, what a mess.... Anyway, that's it for now. Glad to be past the bamboo planking. Hi Tim, That first planking looks good to me. As for the slightly misplaced gun port, I`m pretty sure that`s a closed gun port anyway. The situation could be recovered, but as you say, if it`s not on the display side it shouldn`t be an issue. Keep up the good work, doing well. Very nice work Tim, certainly coming along and good work with cutting the gun ports... . As for your misplaced port, it will not cause you any problems at all simply because it is a closed port but if you decide to carry out a repair then it wouldn't be a difficult task. Plus you have the added plus of the second layer of planking meaning any repair you do will be hidden... .. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next update. Regards Alan

Hello Tim, excellent progress on your sovereign. I remember how tricky it was marking out the gunports, if you've only made one mistake then that's pretty good going in my book.look forward to your next layer of planking going on. Thanks for all the kind words, folks. And I'm glad to hear that my decision to just let that misplaced port be isn't going to cause trouble later on. I've been thinking about what I would do different on my next build (whatever that turns out to be). I was thinking that maybe if I used a sharpie to mark the ribs as I add each bamboo strip... It would be completely accurate then. I realize a lot of the markings would disappear when I sand the hull, but maybe enough of the markings would remain to make it a simple matter of connecting the dots. Your doing a great job and I think you have learned a lot from the 1st planking that will hold you in good stead for the next layer. The main thing you should be patting yourself on the back for is that she looks as she should at this stage of the build so you got it right. ROFL I know what you mean about sanding dust gets everywhere much to the shagrin of SWMBO, happy building Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Just another quick update. I really need to remember to take more pictures... :P After much debate, I decided not to go with the stained wood on the lower hull, sticking to the painted version instead. I didn't have quite enough confidence in my planking, so decided the paint might help with any minor imperfections. I feel like things are coming along quite well. I'm really pretty happy with how it's looking at this point. I think that some of my measurements were a little off as some of the lines aren't exactly like they're show in the book. But I don't forsee any insurmountable trouble being caused by this. I've been giving some thought to how I'm going to do this better on my next build, though. Nothing teaches better than experience, I guess. lol I'm in the process now of framing out the gun ports. Aiming to have that much (at least) done this weekend. Got all my yardwork done for the year, so I should have plenty of time to spend on it this weekend. That's it for now. Thanks for looking. Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it, and happy Thursday to the rest. Just another quick update. Progress on the beak, and the third deck is in. I used soy sauce to stain the deck planks, and I think it turned out nice. Plus, the ship smells pretty good. lol. It gave it a nice light golden hue. At this point, I'm dry-fitting the quarter deck and fore castle. It appears that the gunwales are a little wider than the pre-cut deck platforms, so I'm going to give some thought to that today. I can use bar clamps to pull the gunwales in (I tested it a minute ago, and they have enough flex), but I'm concerned that once I release the clamps they will just spring back to where they were. I'm not sure that glue can hold them in that flexed position. I may just have to give it a try and see what happens. Anyway, here's a pic of where it stands now. Thanks for looking. Hi Tim looking good and smelling better lol The decks are a bit small but the best bet is to use a bit of the ply to make up the difference as pulling the sides in will put to much strain on the hull . Hope this helps Rgd Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Sovereign of the Seas . Virginia . Scotland . San Felipe . Corel vasa , Santisima Trinadad X section , Vasa Next Build ? Hi Tim,lovely job so far, soya sauce how the hell did you think of that? Looks good though. As for the deck being too narrow I did the same as Martyn, wasn't brave enough to try clamping Man he took his time in the sun Had a dream to understand A single grain of sand He gave birth to poetry But one day will cease to be Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

Very nice work Tim, looking good.... .. I also did the same as the others, trying to clamp to close any gaps is likely to run into problems later even to the point of glue giving way after the build is finished. Too risky for my liking..... Regards Alan

Thank you everyone for the guidance. I'll definitely be taking your advice. As for the soy sauce, it was pure lucky coincidence. I happened to be thinking that the stain I had would be too dark for the deck, while eating Chinese food for dinner... lol.
