Hi Guys, looking for advice on applying decals, I have the two decals provided with the kit, the "powered by honda" decal set perfectly however parts of some of the letters from the "shell" decal did not.
I have a set of tobacco decals in the post which I plan to add to the model, I'm wondering is there anything other than placing the decal in water, then sticking to the model that I should be doing to get the best result?
I will have to back order the "shell" decals or get them from ebay, before I do so I want to be sure I'm doing everything correctly.
Help greatly appreciated!

Hello Podge,
Not sure what you mean by "parts of the letters didn't set properly"? Do you mean they are starting to lift away from the bodywork? If so, are you using just plain water without any additional 'setting' solutions? If using just water, do not get the decals sopping wet before sliding them from the backing sheet as too much water will just dilute the glue on the back of the decal and then they won't stick very well. You need to just dip them in the water (preferably distilled, or 'de-ionised' as they call it now?) for a few seconds until the backing sheet darkens and then place them on some tissue to remove excess water, and once you can slide the decal on the backing sheet it is ready to apply to your model.

Microsol and Microset are both easily obtainable from most modelling outlets or on the likes of Ebay. Practice their use on an old model with any spare decals first just to get the hang of it, but DO NOT TOUCH the decals after application of the solution and once they start to wrinkle - you will ruin them - the wrinkling will disappear naturally as the decal tightens and conforms to the shape of the model so leave well alone until that happens and don't panic about the wrinkling, it is supposed to do that first as part of the process!!

@ Steve I ordered the decal sheet with only tobacco decals. An extra 4 euro would have included all decals  , oh well! @ Kev I added the decals to water for two mins then applied immediately so that was the mistake, at least it only effected the shell decal. The tutorial looks good cheers, I have a smaller cheaper model I can practice applying decals on so ill get Microsol and Microset and take it from there. Thanks!

May I suggest practice on a smaller model until u are happy with decals there is a lot of help on here as Kev said. Facebook-model maker

No problem Podge, glad to help. If the Shell decal is still attached to the model, but has just started to lift away, you may be able to get away with not having to buy replacement decals. Just apply some of the Microset (which is specifically designed to improve decal adhesion) beneath the edges of the decal with a soft brush and then gently entice it back onto the model surface by brushing it down against the surface with the same brush as the decal softens slightly, then leave to dry? Once it has dried then apply some Microsol, then leave absolutely well alone until it all tightens and goes flat against the model surface. Once that has dried just give the area a gentle wipe with some distilled water to remove watermarks if there are any left by the solutions and that should do the job?
Two minutes is WAY too long to soak the decals, you should just dampen them - never soak them until the decal starts to float away from the decal paper, as by then you will have lost most of the glue that sticks them to the model!
That's one of the pitfalls of life though I suppose, you have to learn by making mistakes and in modelling that can sometimes be expensive!?

 Hi Podge Kev has more or less covered it and can only agree with what he says. On another note too I have the after market Tobaco Decals and mine has 3 shell logo's on it so if all fails you will have spares.
