I have been planning, researching and collecting materials for this build for the last 18 months. The build will be a static display model of HMS Hood as she was in her final configuration. The build will be a long slow process and will be carried out along side my U96, Akagi and Victory builds. The build is based on the 1/128 GRP hull produced by Fleetscale and resin primary and secondary armament and ships boats have been purchased although these will be modified as the build progresses. Photoetch rail stantions and companionways have also been purchased although I am going to attempt making my own photoetch frets for the UP launchers. Almost everything else will be scratch built. The hull is approx 2040mm long and 220mm beam and has all the plating detail moulded into it, pics 1,2 & 3. Some of the surface detail, such as portholes, will be removed and replaced. I have marked and drilled 4 4mm holes in the base of the hull and glued steel plates (which have drilled and tapped to to take M4 screws) to the inside to which brass pedestals will be attached for display purposes, pic 4. The next job will be to mark and drill the holes for the prop shafts and to make and attach the bilge keels. I also have to finish machining the prop shafts and 'A' frame bearings. Fleetscale are leaders in large scale RC ship kits and the Hood being one of the most popular.
A great start and look forward to seeing how you get on, at least you don't have hours of seemingly endless hull planking to complete

Hi, Ihave been doing a few bits on the build. I have started to make the rudder. I first cut 2 pieces of 1mm thick plastic sheet to the correct shape and glued them together, pic 1. I then glued on a piece of 4.8mm plastic tube to act as the rudder post and then glued a piece of 0.25mm plastic sheet to each side of the rudder to bring it to the correct thickness and overlapping the rudder post to reinforce it, pic 2. The rudder will be sanded to shape once fully dry. I will fix it to the hull by drilling a hole through the hull and lower fixing point and then passing a plastic rod through the hull and rudder. I have also started cutting the ahull access for the prop shafts, pic 3. It looks a bit messy at the moment but once the bulges around the hull entry bearings are made and fitted it will be fine. I did make the the prop shafts a while ago from 5mm stainless steel rod but i have since found that 2 of these are too short so will have to redo them but I can use the other 2 to position and make the 'A' frame support bearings. Getting away from the hull I have also started to make the 4" gun ready lockers, of which there are many. I made 2 lockers from plastic sheet, strip and brass wire (each having about 30 component parts)Pic 4. I then made a silicone mould of these (my first attempt at this) and then cast more lockers in resin. Pic 5 shows one of the first lockers cast, not too bad for a first attempt, only a few small pinholes. The resin I was using only had a 90 second pot life so it didn't allow much time to get into all the fine detail. I have since ordered different resin with a 3 minute pot life which should make life easier. I have started to work on the bilge keels but have no photos of them yet. Nice work Graeme, casting the lockers is the way to go there are loads of them as for pin holes Mr hobbys Dissolved putty is great for filling them. http://www.ebay.co.uk/it...5615:g:FsIAAOxyVaBS2qss
I too found the resin kit I got would go off too fast and went for a slower set like yourself although I also found that it runs out fast when you start casting Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Thanks for the comments. I have used the dissolved putty on my U 96 build, in fact I think it was yourself that recommended it then.

I have done a little more on the build though it's always easy to find space to work on a hull this size. I have started on the inboard prop shaft 'A' frames. Pic 1 shows the the lower support cut from brass sheet with 2 locating pins soldered into it. Pic 2 shows the prop shafts temporarily in place with a plywood former to hold them in the correct position and pic 3 shows the lower support in place ready to be soldered. Pic 4 shows the lower support soldered and the rudder sat in place to check positioning. The rudder still needs to be sanded to its final shape. Pic 5 shows the other half of the 'A' frame soldered in situe with a piece of heat resistant tile behind it so as not to affect the hull. A small butane gas torch was used to do the soldering. The parts still need to be cleaned up. Pic 6 shows the inner 'A' frame sat in place with the outer prop shafts held in place with plywood ready to start fitting the outboard 'A' frames. I have also had a go at making my own photoetch parts for the UP launchers framework, the barrels will be brass tube from Albion alloys and the mounts will be made from sheet plastic. I did the artwork for the fret on Google sketchup and followed instructions found on the internet for producing the etch brass. It took a couple of attempts to get the UV resist to sit on the brass with no air bubbles between the brass and resist and Pic 7 & 8 show the result of my first go at etching.
