Another little update. This has been progressing slowly for the last week and a half, as all I've been doing was a simple cycle: sand, varnish, wait 24h - repeated ten times. But I have to say, it was oh so worth it. Also: Le Tonkinois varnish - highly recommended.
First layer of varnish:
Fifth layer of varnish:
Tenth layer of varnish (ok, I'm cheating a bit, I used a better camera here):
I might put a few more layers inside the cabin later when I will be varnishing the exterior, but for now that's enough and I felt I'm ready to close the overnight cabin - and start planking the deck.
Work in progress:
Close to being finished:
So, next steps:
- Filling in the gaps - Planking of the stern - Final sanding and shaping - Then I can start doing the 2nd layer of planking!
Few troubles while getting to this stage:
- The thin plywood that covers the decks - it requires quite a lot of trimming and positioning, it's not perfect which can be seen on the last photo - so I still have some careful work to do here
- I managed to break the mahogany side wall of the overnight cabin - I succeeded in gluing it together but it's clearly visible (4th photo from the top on the right). It won't show on completed model though, unless someone peers into the cabin with a flashlight and a dentist mirror... Still, not happy with that because I will always know it's there.
- The 'leather-like' (vinyl, I think) material that was supplied to cover the floor and some parts of upholstery is total crap. Probably the worst part of the kit so far, and I'm replacing it. It's so rigid that it can't be wrapped around the corners of the floor panels, springs back when folded and doesn't yield itself to any method of shaping I subjected it to - including scoring with a hobby knife, heat, or sanding to make it thinner. Very difficult to work with. I have ordered some white 'ultra-leather' offcuts - this is a fairly expensive artificial leather material that in the real world is used for yacht upholstery. It's supposed to be very soft and supple so I hope I will have more luck with using that instead of the vinyl covering supplied with the kit.Any images I post on my personal builds are free to be used and shared under Creative Commons Attribution license, which means you can do what you want with them, on the condition you mention I'm the author.

Hi Michu I have this kit too and your doing a great job as for the cabin once its built who will ever know about that hidden item. As for general gloss acrylic varnish I use Rustins which gives just brilliant results but as mine will be the RC version I will be using a good traditional petrolium based varnish for the outer hull. Regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Regards Andy Le Tonkinois is a traditional, artisan varnish, based on natural resins and tree oils. Very durable and water proof - better than most yacht varnishes. Non-toxic, no nasty fumes (actually has a very nice smell), no solvents, self-levelling (brush marks completely gone after few minutes) etc. Have a look at their website, I can't recommend this stuff enough - and should be perfect for an RC model too while looking great.
