Hello all,
My experimental model using the ‘foiling’ technique to create a Natural Metal Finish is now complete!!

It was great fun, though very time consuming, but definitely worth the effort and I am very pleased with the outcome of my first trial in this method. It was done as a precursor for a bigger project, just to see how it all worked and I am pleased to say that I now feel confident enough to apply this method to the bigger project when I start it next year. I will also be using this method for every future model I build that requires any amount of Natural Metal Finish.
Airfix 1:72 North American P-51D Mustang - Tuskegee Red Tails (Kit # A01004)
I am not going to say too much about the finished model here, as I prefer to let the pictures do the talking except to say that this is a nice little kit from Airfix which is one of their recent ‘new tooling’ releases and is a great improvement on what went before. It is not the easiest to build, but it does produce a nice example of this iconic WWII fighter if a given a little care in the construction of it and for the very small price asked, it is an absolute bargain – I can highly recommend it to all aviation modellers!!
Built out of the box except for the use of a ‘Quickboost’ resin replacement seat and a few small scratchbuilt details.
The following photo shoot is picture heavy and includes some black and white photos at the end just for a bit of nostalgic fun. In some of the photos you can see a few brushmarks beneath the foil where the glue was applied, and which makes it look a little rough but that is just the macro lens on my camera being a bit over zealous - please remember this is just 1:72 scale and in reality it looks much better and smoother using the human Mk.1 eyeball!

Absolutely fantastic Kev! Without knowing the scale I think anybody would have thought 1/48 at the very least! That foil method is worth every hour spent on it! (And I know just what it's like trying to cram everything into a '72!) Were the drop tanks done in foil too? There's some nasty curves on those things!  Well done again! Wow. That's impressive, especially in this scale. Also I add my vote to the call for tutorial :) Any images I post on my personal builds are free to be used and shared under Creative Commons Attribution license, which means you can do what you want with them, on the condition you mention I'm the author.

Beautiful work Kev, the foil method is certainly very effective giving a really convincing finish  the decals also look like they've settled down nicely job. An top job

@ Trev - Glad you like it, I know you are an aircraft fan and it's always nice to receive comments from you my friend.
@ Robin - Thanks for that mate and yes, the drop tanks were foiled despite the 'nasty curves' as you put it, they took seven strips each to get it to conform tightly enough without creasing!!
@ Nemesis - Cheers Daran, my old friend, I knew you'd like it as I remember you said you were a big fan of the Mustang? I have to say, as nice as a Spitfire is, I still think that the Mustang is nicer!?
@ Ian - Not sure if you are referring to the main silver colour or just the painted red bits, but the Natural Metal Finish is all done with kitchen foil, it isn't painted? Thanks for your comment.
@ Dave - I agree mate, it is very effective and convincing, I'm very pleased with it and the decals weren't too difficult to get them to lay down properly.
In response to those who have asked for a tutorial, both in this thread and my other thread on 'foiling' that lead to this build - rest assured, I will be doing one early in the New Year when I have more time?

Hi Kev, I've just seen this Amazing metal finish that you've achieved...unbelievable ! What a great finish ! How did you manage to apply the foil without wrinkles and creases? Very impressive stuff.
Is this a "bare metal foil " product?
I hope you get a chance to post a tutorial on the process.

No it's not a 'Bare Metal Foil' product, it's just ordinary kitchen foil and 'Micro Metal Foil Adhesive'?
I will be doing a tutorial for the technique in due course?

Lovely clean build Kev. I've built a couple of the new-tool Airfix P-51Ds and really enjoyed them. Great work with the foil finish.  Mike G.

Yes, the Airfix 1:72 Mustang P-51D is a stunning little kit, one of the best in this scale in my opinion and very easy to build too, though the foiling was quite time consuming, but that was nothing to do with the kit obviously? I definitely intend to build at least another one of them at some point myself.
