Happy New Year! I haven't been able to work on my SotS build lately, so I thought I'd share a few pics of my "time-filler" project. This is only the second wooden ship I've attempted. Based on my admittedly limited experience, I really only have two comments on this kit in general. One, I'm finding some of the wood a bit drier than that of the SotS kit. A little extra care is required to prevent the occasional splitting or chipping. Nothing major, but I have had to cut some pieces more than once on account of it. On the plus side, they seem to have included more than enough lumber to allow for this. Two, and this is probably a bigger concern, is that the instructions are much more sparse than the DeAgonstini kit. Much more sparse.... Though that's a bit intimidating for a beginner such as myself, it has also given me a bit of freedom as well. I feel like it freed me a little bit to be more personal with the decoration (for better or worse, lol). In any event, so far it has been a pretty enjoyable build. And the smaller scale (compared to the SotS) has made it a fair deal quicker as well. No spending an entire month just planking the hull here. lol. Anyway, here's where I currently am: Thanks for looking. Happy building! That's an interesting looking little ship and looks like you've done a rather nice job of it too

She looks great, fab job you're doing with it too..... .. I'm afraid, when it comes to instructions with kits you won't find better than that supplied with DeAg and their partworks. Full kit instructions tend to assume the builder has experience in building wooden ships so are rather sparse in content.... .. This will be good experience for you though..... Regards Alan

It is a bit of a shock when you see the limited and sometimes badly translated instructions in a wooden ship kit compared to a partwork, but you seem to have overcome this and are doing a lovely job. Well, after a bit of confusion, and a bit of ad-lib building, I think this one is done. I tried doing a few things just to see how they'd turn out. Though it didn't always turn out as planned, I have to admit, despite its flaws, I'm a kinda proud of it. It is my first completed wooden ship, after all. lol. Anyway, it really was a lot of fun. and a great learning experience. The kit itself wasn't perfect. I did end up needing to buy a few bits and pieces to complete it. For example, they (oddly, I thought) included 2 extra cannons, but not enough eye bolts... lol. And there is A LOT of room for improvement in the instructions. Some of the pieces didn't even remotely fit together, and needed a bit of creative adjustment. But, again, it was fun, and I don't regret the little issues it presented. I went with a heavily weathered look. It seemed appropriate. I've been to China a couple of times, and though it's a really lovely country, full of some wonderfully friendly people, it's just dirty as can be... :P I wish I could hsave thought of a way to age the decals that were provided. They seem too colorful on the finished model. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear it. Anyway, here she is... Boven Model turned out very nicely. Difficult to advise on the decals as would i be correct in thinking these are self adhesive vinyl ? Difficultvwith this material to get paint to hold but i guess you could try airbrushing or dry brushing some paint over these. Happy Modelling

For a first attempt at a wooden build, you have turned out a masterpiece. It is truly stunning, and looks like she's been plying the Yangtse riveer for many years. Great work on the weathering. I look forward to seeing your next build on the forum Happy building David

I'm not surprised you're proud of this as it,looks very nice indeed. The weathering you've added really has added to making it looked aged, and the anything that may not be quite perfect you could put down to the age of the ship and on the fly repairs the crew have had to do

You're all very kind. The decals are (I think) vinyl. I tried putting a wash on them, but it just ran right off. I may experiment with it a bit more though. Tim Johnson I came here in peace, seeking gold and slaves. - Jack Handy Builds: Sovereign of the Seas, Amati Chinese Pirate Junk

Fantastic job and this was the first kit i completed which I did this as a little infill ptoject during the Bismarck partwork. I got frustrated waiting on parts to arrive so I bought junk. It turned out ok but yours looks so much more natural due to the weathering - well done.
