Right then lets crack on with the build.

So I am creating a Diorama inspired by a scene from the film Ice Cold in Alex where Katey the ambulance has arrived at an oasis to get fuel and water to continue to flee the advancing Germans.

I have a number of items on order for this but we can crak on with the Ambulance which will be the centre piece

So lets begin with some basic tools for those not familiar with resin.
Resin is perfectly safe to work with if you take precautions. so a good quality mask is a must when sanding rain parts. to help keep the harmful dust down it is best to wet sand parts. I will use a scraping tool for removing heavy seams and then a variety of wet n dry paper grades for fine. A razor saw is handy for removing parts with a thick connection to its tree. As for adhesives i us CA for the photo etch and wire parts but otherwise use a two part epoxy adhesive which I have found fils gaps better than CA and tends to give a stronger bond.

As for health and safety Its good practice to rinse any dust away rather than blow it across your workspace and wash your hands regularly as well as using a face mask.

All the parts were given a was in warm soapy water to remove the release agent of the resin. at this point I also inspected the parts for damage, bubbles and warping. a very small number of air bubbles to fill and one slight warped part, not bad all in all.

Prepping the Chassis was the first job, most of the clean up focused on the front bumper which had a heavy seam its full length. With this done the springs were aded. the rear springs did not align well with both the Chassis and the axel so I chose to remove the locating pins for the axel and align it centrally using the prop shaft to get the correct distance. all the springs needed not much clean up at all.

The hubs need adding to the front axel before it can be fitted. A nice touch is that the hubs are moulded complete so the vehicle can be modelled with a wheel off, they are also directional so can be set showing the wheels in a turn. care is needed to ensure the bottom of the wheels tuck in slightly. There are some parts to be added to the inside of the hubs, the steering linkage etc is installed after the axel is fitted in the instructions, but you get better access if you do them firsts.

The 5 wheels have been cleaned up ready for paint

I have also started the rear cabin. this has been built up as far as I intend to before paint the other side will be added after paint.

Finally i have selected a base for the Diorama

having watched the film the Ambulance has a lot of paint chips. the usual colour for these vehicles was Khaki drab. I am going to guess that in WW2 this was painted over in desert yellow just as the Army does today so I will be doing my chips in Khaki drab. inside the ambulance was always cream so any chipping in there will be bear metal. I do have some scratch building to do, grab handles in the rear cab and a canvas cover for the window on the centre door as well as two rolls of sand matts for the front mud guards.

Thats it for now

Cracking start to your build Jase, very nice work and enjoying this one already!! Love that little etched brass set of louvres on the side panel. Some great health and safety tips in there too for those who haven't tried a full resin build before and I agree, epoxy resin glue is stronger and more suitable as a gap filler too - very well done so far mate, watching this all the way!! Cool ThumpUp

Glad to help with finding the Arab chap earlier, and looking forward to seeing him built and painted. Just a thought here Jase, will you be including a figure to represent the big South African guy played by Sir Anthony Quayle in the film? If so, it might be worth looking at this set of Hornet 1:35 replacement heads from Historex? I think the guy second from left looks quite similar to him with the same type of square jaw and short stubble haircut? :

Hope that helps and looking forward to your next update already Jase. Cool ThumpUp

Hi Jase.

Looking great there! I found a figure which might just do for the nurse. Have a look at the Preiser website at www.preiser-figuren-onlineshop.com and set No. 63069
There is a female wearing an 'almost' good set of overalls, you'd just need to extend the trouser bottoms and add the shirt pockets!

Keep up the great work Cool

Just a quick update...

Some of my Dioram bits arrived today. I am depicting the moment that the Ambulance arrives at a fuel dump Oasis so needed some buildings BigGrin

I also got my first figures. So as some of you may be aware the Film Ice Cold in Alex was inspired by the book of the same name by Christopher London. As will all films based on a book there is some 'artistic licence' applied Thus I feel quite within my rights to apply the same 'artistic licence' to my diorama inspired by the film Thus my Captain Anson has a beard, oh and a t-towel on his headCool I also have my Arab

Also got some barrels to add to jerry cans and other barrels for the fuel dump

HaHa!! Not sure I agree with you there Jase, I still haven't finished the Merlin engine (it's very detailed mind you!) from the 1:32 Tamiya Spitfire Mk IX that I entered into last year's competition, let alone the rest of the aircraft and dio .... and I'm gonna have to postpone that for a while now just to give me half a chance to finish this year's P-38 in time!!

I don't think you've got anything to worry about mate?! BigGrin Blink Huh Blushing ThumpUp

You've certainly acquired some nice pieces there Jase, boy have i picked the wrong year to enter,by the way your captain figure looks familiar but can't remember from where.Confused
Man he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand
He gave birth to poetry
But one day will cease to be

I have started the job of priming the chassis and the main body. so far no filling needed other than one bubble in the ambulance floor which I filed with super glue.

Also had to select another base as the buildings did not work on the round one.

Nice start Jase, work on the ambulance looks good so far and the layout for your diorama looks good. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished article!! Drool Cool ThumpUp

I really can't understand why the mainstream manufacturers haven't released a 1:35 kit of this Austin ambulance yet, especially as it is such a popular subject amongst modellers? There is a kit of the american Dodge ambulance which has been out for years so why not the Austin? Huh Blink Sad

The dodge ambulance covers more bases I guess WW2 and Korea. I have built the Italeri? dodge ambulance, not a great kit lol. You can get the Austin in Plastic in other scales, but would be nice to see her on the mass market especial as its the Ambulance the Queen worked with during the war, now there is a nice little Dio idea BigGrin

you mite like this then Drool Drool Drool

Great link Jase! That's a really nice looking kit too!Cool

I loved the bit about the pump could fit through a standard doorway - whoever designed that pump was certainly using their brains!Cool Cool
Looking great on the build too, it's bringing back all the memories of putting my little Airfix K2 together for the airfield diorama (yours seems to have more bits in it though!BigGrin )
