Hi All, I`ve got a homemade spray booth made from some scrap ply and square section timber, but it`s not got an extraction unit. So I started looking around for a suitable one to purchase. (Or two if they fit together to make a bigger one). So here`s my issue. All the ones I`ve found so far say "not to be used with flammable paints/materials" and all the paints I have are flammable, or need thinning to spray and the thinners is flammable. you would need either a tubeaxial or squirrel cage blower so the electronics are housed in a sealed unit out of the airflow.

If you have a filter of some kind already fitted to the back of the booth, you could buy a cheap or second hand vacuum cleaner with a lengthy hose and just connect it to the back of the filter housing. When you switch it on, there should be enough suction to draw the unused atomised paint into the filter and any that gets past that should just end up in the vacuum cleaner bag or bowl? Works quite well and is cheap or free if you are about to replace your old vacuum cleaner?
The added bonus is you could get into swmbo's good books and score some bonus brownie points whilst she thinks you're being nice to her but you're really just slyly adding to your modelling equipment? Just make sure you grab the old Hoover before she chucks it out and say something like - "Oooh ... I've just realised I can find a use for that old thing my dear!!

Do you have a dedicated room for model building? if so you could consider an extractor built into the wall? I do like the hoover idea if you could couple it some how, probably a bagel one so you can chuck the bag and pack the hose with some cotton wool as a filter at the front so that can be changed?? just thoughts never tried it J “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

Check this out. I made my own spray booth with this motor. Its not explosion proof but they add this disclaimer. Is this spray booth explosion proof? No, to be classified as explosion proof, a vapor proof motor and switches must be used. Explosion proof components are very expensive and would make this booth cost prohibitive. However, for an explosion to occur, the concentration of flammable vapor must be at or above its lower explosive limit (LEL). In most cases, if the fan is running before vapor is introduced, the concentration of vapor will be diluted and less than its LEL. I'm not sure what that exactly means but I have never had an issue. So I guess what its saying is turn the motor on before spraying. Don't spray then go oops and flick the switch. KABOOOOM!!!!
