Thanks for all the feedback on the painting guys, quite pleased with it myself for a first go, probably will have a go at the lower hull next.Just a couple of questions for those in the know .1 why do vallejo air and model paint versions of hull red look completely different. And 2 does anyone know a good way to weather the wooden deck veneer, I'm a little worried that stain or a wash might affect the sticky backing?

BigGrin Hi Nightwisher

The colours are different as different navy's, country's used different shades of anti fowling red as a note most merchant marines from each country also used the shade available in there country's. The red red colour is closer to British Navy anti fowling red where as the more purple one is closer to the Imperial Japanese Navy anti fowling red.

coming back to you on the deck question. I would use some of the scrap to test, but I think if you were to seal the deck with matt varnish first that would protect the deck from any soaking from a wash. however I would still be very carful and only pin wash. unfortunately the areas you want to show shadow etc will be where the veneer meets the plastic and will allow the wash to get under the adhesive backing.

test it on some scrap, but I would be very carful personally.

hope that helps?

Rather than a wash perhaps you could use pigments instead or alternatively I've seen someone very lightly mist over the wooden deck with an airbrush to great effect, they used Tamiya XF20 medium grey thinned about 90%

Thanks for looking in Ian,time for a small update. Didn't get much done this weekend (stupid valentines day).I had a go at weathering the wooden deck with a tamiya weather master kit using mud colour, quite pleased with the result. I also tried to rust the steel plates ,not sure about how this turned out , only the rear deck is fixed down so far.

WowCool that looks brilliant.

You have to give credit to Matchbox for putting out a kit all thise years back that can still be turned into an outstanding model with some skillful building and a great paint job.

You are doing a fantastic job on this one - its a real treat to see BigGrin
Happy Modelling

Great progress (mine is still on the shelf of doom, can't remember why) word of warning though I looked at it a couple of weeks ago and the wooden deck was all curled up and ha almost rolled into a tube I unrolled it and put some heavy things on it, it might pay you to keep an eye on yours like the weathering on your deck looks amazing.
Ken's the name modeling's the game.

Hi folks, haven't done a lot in the last few weeks (can't believe we're in the third month already, starting to doubt it will get finished in time).I have painted the bottom of the hull, fitted the support beams on the rear deck and assembled the wheel house. I added some framing around the windows with plastic strip. Ken you were spot on with the deck sheet curling up, I have noticed mine is starting to lift on the edges and so have glued them back down, thanks for the warning.

Whats that saying about "time and tide wait for no man?" And these days its so true.

I always thought it just me noticing how quickly time passes these days but it seems i am not alone in that. Like you i cannot beleve how the year is flying by again.

Ship is looking very good indeed.

Hi guys, sorry it's been so long, have been really busy at work leaving hardly anytime for modelling. I have been doing bits and pieces here and there, have finally managed to get all the decks glued down without too much trouble. I have done some weathering using vallejo rust and black washes, hope I haven't gone overboard ( sorry about the pun ) .
