BigGrin Hi All

Still awaiting the arrival of the copper tubing so I have started prepping the hull. The hull when it arrives looks nice and shiny with a smooth gel coat although there can be some imperfections like air bubble holes and some other imperfections all that will need filling and sanding back.

Firstly that shiny coating needs to come off it contains waxes and mould release agents to help removal from the mould. A good sanding down to remove the waxes is all that is needed so the hull is a dull white instead of shiny most imperfections will dissapear with the sanding but the more deeper holes or creases will need to be opened up with a round head sanding bit to remove any wax. once the holes are gouged out mix up some car body filler and fill then sand again to a smooth finish.

That's 90% of the hull ready for the undercoat the last area around the prop shafts will be done when the shafts are fitted. As always when sanding any type of glass fibre hull always wear a mask as the dust can be harmful.

More soon

Andy

Your getting on with this one well. Been following with interest as a fibreglass hull is something i am not sure we have seen on the forum so far (unless in my absence i have missed any builds).

Some different building techniques so very interesting.
Happy Modelling

Nice work Andy that hull looks well smooth, the last photo looks more like a computer generated model than a real one,
Man he took his time in the sun
Had a dream to understand
A single grain of sand
He gave birth to poetry
But one day will cease to be
Greet the last light of the library...We were here!

BigGrin Hi All

Just a little update on prop shaft greasing. You can buy shafts now that are pre-greased but they can be expensive so most modelers do them themselves. To do this can be a messy problem as you need to fill the tube inside space between the inner and outer shaft to prevent water going up the shaft and sinking your model.

I came across this nifty little tool online basicly its a mini grease gun designed to fill model boat prop shafts with water proof grease with minimal mess and spare tubes of grease are also available.

BigGrin Hi All

The brass pipe shipment finally got delivered by the Mongolian Snail Service so its on with the build, you can see from the first few pics how the tubes all fit inside each other with no gap and how it will look with the A frame and prop.

You may think I am over engineering here but the enemy of all prop shafts is vibration and flex both lead to fast destruction of the bearings which entails replacement of the whole prop shaft. To prevent this happening I use a 3 tube system I picked up from a fellow modeler years ago. This comprises a thin outer tube that will just be inside the hull up to the bulkhead [tube 1], a 6 mm inside diameter tube with a wall thickness of at least 1.5 mm [tube 2] and lastly the outer prop shaft case [tube 3]. The outermost tube can be omitted if there is no need for it as in the central shaft fitting as the main tube will be fixed in position with resin.

The first shaft to be fitted was the central one this entailed drilling out the hole and the fitting of the main 2nd tube in place making sure the run is correct by the use of the prop shaft jig I made. Once the shaft is in its correct position then tacking it in place with spot of superglue but still enable it to be removed if needed at this stage. You may notice that the end of the keel went awol in the drilling process this is no big deal as it was gel coat and can be easily replaced with car filler once the resin has cured.

Once the central shaft is in place then the marking out of the two outer tubes can be done and the tube run cut out of the hull. Next fit the tubes into the jig and through the hull and carefully turn the hull over so that the inner bulkhead can be fitted after drilling out the holes for the tubes. Once the inner bulk head is glued in place the inside of the hull where the cut outs are can be covered with glassfibre matt and resin used to stick it in place at this stage the resin and matt can also be used to seal the central no 2 prop shaft in place. Tomorrow a bluetac or plastacine dam will be placed on the outside hull and resin poured into the cut out on the hull then its more sanding. More soon.

Regards

Hi Andy,
Very good build dairy Andy coming along very well, I do like the large scale builds, good for your new airbrush you may have go up to a 4 needle for the size of that hull ?
