Hello again everyone,
My build is going very slow due becoming a brand new dad :-)
I've nearly finished planking the top half of the victory (pack 3)
I noticed when marking the frame height 4mm above the brackets that the brackets on frame 18 are quite a bit higher than the other frames. By about 3mm. So this means the deck would bulge up at frame 18, but at both 17 and 19 it would be lower.
Is this normal or a fault? It wouldn't be hard to correct it but I just want to be sure how it should be.
Many thanks in advance :-)
Neil

That's strange. They're the same height as 17 and 19 in my build.

Neil It is well documented in many of build diary for Victory that some have an issue with one of the ribs needing modification. I certainly had to. It would be helpful if you could take some pics so we can see the problem. might be worth reading some of the earliest build diarys this may be helpful Jase “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Hi Neil, You don`t say if you have the same problem on both port and starboard sides. If you do, then I would guess you don`t have rib 18 fully seated in the keel and if not you will have an issue with the lower planking as well, as rib 18 will then be too high as well. Hold up for a while and I`ll get one of our ship experts on your problem. In the meantime try and get some pictures of rib 18 top and bottom on this thread as it will give people more info to work on to help you. Hi, Delboy is spot on here, if your frame 18 is higher than frames 17 & 19 then it is more than likely frame 18 is not fully seated in its slot. Removing the frame is straight forward if you have used PVA glue, simply use a small brush with some hot water and gently brush hot water along the glued joints. After a few minutes you should be able to separate the parts.. .. Hope this helps. Regards Alan

That's the dreaded rib 15 problem. 18 shouldn't have this particular issue.

At the point he is at, he's already got several decks in as well as a majority of the planking. Me personally I'd think I'd be cutting off the upper ends of the rib, trim the length down then glue it back in. That's me personally though, don't take this as advice. I'm stark raving mad.

Thanks Greyhawk, looking at this again, missed where Neil says he's on pack 3. Neil, can you please post some pics of exactly where you are at in you build and the problem you have. It is better we are sure before giving you a corrective course of action to take. . If you are at the point I believe you are at then it will be a fairly easy fix but lets be sure. Can you also tell me, are the first two decks you fitted level across ribs 17-19?. Regards Alan

Hi Everyone! Thank you for the rapid replies. I didn't expect to wake up to all of that advice. I must admit I don't like the thought of unsticking the frame. Surely it would be easier to trim a bit off the top of the brackets? I can confirm it is the same at both sides. Also it is seated properly at the bottom. The lowest deck sits fine too. I have attached some images of the top with me holding a plank so you can hopefully see how raised up the brackets on frame 18 are. Also a picture near the false keel so you can see that it is seated properly. I look forward to your replies :-) Many thanks, Neil

There's the problem right here Somehow the side arms of the frame sit higher than the surrounding ones.

But it confuses me why the bottom of the frame sits flush with the bottom of the keel. Any way at least we've established it is a problem and now I need to work out the best way to correct it. Is it best to cut the tops of the frames below the lower bracket and shorten them? Or just trim the tops of the brackets down? Thank you for your support :-) Neil

Well it doesn't look as bad as I imagined it to be from the text description. I think you'd get away with sanding down the bracket to the correct height. Note I'm not as far into the build as you so any advice is conjecture and you should probably listen to someone further ahead in the build.

Hi Neil, thanks for posting the pics it makes things a lot clearer. As Greyhawk has said it is not as bad as it could be and it certainly looks as if frame 18 hasn't been fully seated into its slot. In this instance I would probably reduce the support brackets on frame 18 to ensure decks is level across frames 17-19. You will also need to check the level on the next deck down as you may have to do the same thing there. Finally, you may also have to add a packing strip to the bottom of the frame when it comes to planking the lower hull otherwise you may end up with a dip.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Alan

Alan Hi Alan, Yes it looks like i will be reducing the height of all the brackets on that frame. I know what you mean about packing the bottom. I will look out for that. Thank you for your help. Neil
