My offering will be the 1:80 scale Constructo Le Pourquoi-Pas? Scientific Research Vessel. The Pourquoi-Pas? was a three masted French Research vessel, work on which began in Saint-Malo in September 1907 at the behest of Doctor Jean-Baptiste Charcot. Charcot was so keen to become a sailor that whenever his father tried to talk him out of it, he would reply: "Marin, pourquoi pas?" (A sailor, why not?). Eventually this was to be the name he gave to his ocean research ship. It sank two miles off the coast of Iceland in September 1936 ( 80 years ago this year). With a crew of 41 only the Helmsman managed to reach the shore. This kit was picked up very cheap from Ebay a while back and came to light again during the start of my spring clean. Initial intentions are to replace some of the stock overscale kit parts and also to decide on the planking as the original ship was Oak built. If I can keep this one going I want to get it to the stage of constructing a display case for it and have some ideas that may prove of interest to many of the builders on this forum. Thursday 11th February 2016I am now making a start on my build of the ship “Le Pourquoi-Pas”. The kit produces a model exactly as the ship was in 1925, according to the plan in The Maritime Museum in Paris. It was 40 metres in length between perpendiculars, 9,20 metres in the beam and had a load draught of 4.30 metres. Built of oak, it was fitted with extremely robust, tightly joined frames lined with two thick strakes. The stem was constructed with iron frames on the outside and extremely thick layers of zinc plate. It had two boilers and a 450 horse-power engine. The coal bunker had a capacity of 250 tons. The facilities on board included three laboratories and oceanographic equipment situated on the rear deck.Here are some pictures of the kit itself.
We get two manuals to aid the construction. One is a texture and black and white picture edition and the second book is a colour photo stage by stage build guide. There are two full size plan sheets as well as a third showing how the sails need to be cut from the material included in the kit (this should be an interesting part of the build with the number of sails required). Component parts are all individually bagged and laid out in neat order in the preformed tray. Under the tray we have the ply sheets with the pre-cut keel and ribs on one sheet and the decking elements on the other. There is also a small ply sheet that holds some of the deck structure parts. We also get a small display board (veneered chip board) that can be used to display the finished model. The keel and ribs just press out of the with no tabs to be cut. Not sure how they have cut this as there is no evidence of laser burn on any of the parts. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

Thursday 11th February 2016 Ok let’s get this build underway. Having made do in the past with build boards made out of old shelves or scrap wood I have found at home I decided on this occasion to purchase the build board kit produced by Hobbyzone. The kit is just that and involves quite a bit of construction to get to the stage seen in the first picture below. The board itself is made up of 3 individual panels. Between 2 of the MDF boards we have to install nuts before gluing the parts together. This is all then topped off with a coated hardboard piece. It all makes up into a very sturdy piece of kit. Taking the board that holds the false keel and ribs we refer to the included parts guide and number each component so there are no problems later with mixing up some of the ribs that are very similar in size and shape. Because we want to allow the ribs to fit to the bottom of the false keel it’s important that when mounting the keel into the jig we do not place it too deep. To prevent this happening I have spanned the gap between the 2 clamping jaws with some scraps of planking. We can then tighten up the bolts and then remove these wood scraps. The jig holds the false keel straight and true and to confirm I tested with a square just to ensure all is well. The next stage is then a dry fit of all of the ribs just to gauge what they sit like in the keel. I did find that they are all quite loose in the keel slots and there is sideways play as well as stem to stern play so will need some care to ensure they are glued in correctly. The last 2 pictures show the start of the gluing in stage using the rib gauge that forms part of the build board kit. This allows the ribs to be glued in nice and square and holds them true while the glue is drying. I will continue adding the rest of the ribs to the false keel and will post up the next instalment of my build as soon as that is complete. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

Steve Many thanks for the kind comments. Been away from my building for too long so keen to get up and running again. The build board is by HobbyZone and as i could find no UK stockists i ordered it direct just before christmas. It arrived very quickly via UPS. I will be posting a couple of updates on the build board later as there are a couple of very minor issues with it. One of the main points is the rib holder upright has a tendancy to swivel left to right and you could end up with ribs not at 90" to the keel. Easy Enough to fix as it just needs a couple of cheek pieces so that this part runs along the sides of the board. Happy Modelling
