Friday 12th February 2016The build instructions for this model comprise of a multi-language instruction book accompanied by a full colour pictorial guide showing in more detail some of the build stages as they progress. The first picture below shows the first 2 pages of these guides for the stages I am presently working on. What I now have to glue into place are the “Mast Supports” and these are found in one of the numbered accessory bags within the kit. Interestingly there is a good deal of other component parts that will have to be cut to size from some of the wood lengths included (more on that later in the build). Many kits have slots already made in the false keel to accept the masts but in this case we reinforce the area were the masts will sit and at a later stage drill through the decking to produce these holes. The remaining 2 pictures from this stage show all 6 mast supports glued into position and clamped up to dry. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

SATURDAY 13th February 2016 (AM)The next stage of the build is to install the deck pieces which for this model are made up of 4 individual parts which need to be cut from the ply sheet (were the ribs and false keel just pressed out of the fret the deck pieces are only part cut through and just need finishing off with the use of a sharp craft knife to remove them.) The instructions state that the frame/keel tops should all be level and for this task I have opted to use a set of course/fine Permagrit files as the quality of these make the task very easy indeed. Having glued up the tops of the ribs and false keel I fitted each of the deck pieces in place using some of the kit supplied pins to hold them in place. This is important because the rib tops in the model are cut to represent the deck camber so it is important to pin the deck pieces down while they dry. When all is set the pin heads will be levelled with the tops of the decks to allow for the planking to be applied. My preference when fitting the pins is the use of a Xuron brand pair of pin pliers. I find they give me much better control than the traditional pin pushers and their design prevents pins from bending as you "feed out" just a bit of the pin at a time. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

SATURDAY 13th February 2016 (PM)Having fitted the decks in place the next stage is to add some pre-cut blocks to both stem and stern. These will then be shaped at a later stage. Having looked at the supplied parts I have decided to replace these parts with balsa infills instead. The kit parts are very hard ply and as the keel and ribs appear to be a balsa covered ply I can see potential to cause damage while trying to shape these parts. As I had no Balsa of the correct dimensions available I have laminated a couple of pieces together and when dry these will be cut to match the parts I am replacing. The next stage of the build calls for the decking to be planked so I am going to review my options and look at the wood supplied in the kit to decide how best to do this. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

arpurchase wrote: keep it comming Tony Andy Many thanks. Some challenges and decisions still ahead but happy with how its going so far. Just wanted to do something without remineses of war attached this time and this model had it all. Bargain price from ebay, great history, but a fairly sad end. Have some "Big" ideas on how i would like to present this as a finished model, but still a long way from that. Kind regards. Happy Modelling

Sunday 14th February 2016 The next stage of the build is to add the stern and bow formers. As mentioned in my earlier post the kit parts are pre-shaped but as the wood is extremely hard and the ribs/keel relatively soft I can see some issues when it comes to shape these parts. Therefore, I have decided to recreate these parts using balsa wood in the hope that it will make the shaping of these parts somewhat easier. As I like “easy” I decided to tape the kit parts onto my balsa block with the intention of cutting around these on the fret saw. The hope being I would get an exact match for these parts. Because of space limitations (and having so many items rust on me storing them in the shed) I purchased a while ago the Dremel Fret Saw. I like it as it packs down in 2 parts into its own storage case and takes up very little room. With any tool it’s a case of practice makes perfect and I still have a lot of learning to do but for this task the result was acceptable. Having cut out the parts they are separated from the kit originals. The last 3 pictures show the 4 Balsa parts glued into the hull and clamped. Once these are dry the next stage will be shaping these parts as shown in the kit instructions. The hull assemble is now back in its jig as its back to work for me tomorrow so my next opportunity to put in some more work will probably be next weekend . birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

Hi Tony It is a very fine model you are doing there .I have even had it my self but gave it away to my brother when he showed interest in model building and I had just bought the cutty sark I build on now. He built the whole of last winter and finished hull and some of the cabins on deck. but now he has found an girlfrind so there will probably be no more model building atleast for a loooong time . Look forward to next opdate Cheers Jens

Jens Many thanks for the kind comments. I am enjoying this model as it has a lot of small detail parts to make up and providing I can see it through to its end the finished model (looking at the box) looks very busy and detailed. Happy Modelling

Sunday 21st February 2016The next stage of the build is to shape the stern and bow formers. You may have seen from my post last week that rather than use the kit supplied parts (which are very hard wood) I copied the parts onto balsa wood and glued these into place instead. I have to admit that this week’s part of the build has been giving me a few troubled thoughts on how easy the shaping of these parts might be. I seem to struggle visualising things in 3 dimensions and while the instruction book shows what the finished shaping should look like I was still unsure. Anyhow slow and steady seemed to be the order of the day with lots of constant checking to ensure I did not take things too far. For the actual shaping I used the flat bar file from my Permagrit set, starting with the course file and, as I got closer to the finished shape, switching to the fine file. It’s quite amazing just how much wood gets removed from these parts as can be seen by the ever growing pile of sawdust in the pictures. Having completed this part of the build I must admit to feeling quite happy that it turned out as well as it did. The final part of the build this week was to add part 24 – rear cabin bulkhead and part 25 – rear deck. These parts are identified using the parts plan from the build guide and having cut these from the sheet (although part cut you still need to run a modelling knife around these parts to get them off the fret) they were glued and pinned into place. The next part of the build will be to plank the decks and for this I have decided to avoid the 5mm wide planking supplied in the kit and have ordered some 4mm planking which I will use in place. My next post will have details on how the planking will be prepared and added to the kit. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

Starting to come together Tony, those permagrit tools certainly make short work of a sanding job and looking great Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

I was unsure of those files initially but must admit I have found them to be 100 times better than anything else I have ever used. Happy Modelling

Sunday 21st February 2016 (PM)Well I have been fortunate enough to find some more time this afternoon to move on a stage further (TV had not one thing worth watching). Using a small jeweller’s anvil and hammer my first task this afternoon was to ensure all of the pins used to hold the deck were knocked in far enough to be flush with the decking. To be honest if I had checked a little closer I would have seen that these pins are brass rather than steel so they would have filed down just as easily (ah well lesson learnt for later in the build). I am now at stage 7 of the build and this involves planking the bulkheads and the decks. While I have decided to use a 4mm strip rather than the kit supplied 5mm for the decks, for the bulkheads I went with the kit supplied 5mm pieces. Rather than waste lots of wood I took a measurement of the bulkhead height and added a couple of millimetres to allow for later trimming to size. I then set up a right angle guide on the cutter and “chopped” through 3 of the kit supplied pieces to give me enough planking for the 4 bulkheads that need covering. If you use a cutter like this, I would recommend that you use a pair of tweezers or the like to remove the cut wood because chances are you will catch your fingers on the blade if you get too close and that really hurts (I know from experience ). Having divided each bulkhead with a vertical line it was just a case of gluing the parts into place. When these have had a couple of days to properly dry out I will trim them back and then make a start on the deck planking. And that task is lined up for next weekend . birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling
