So I am now finished all the building for this phase and ready to start fairing when I noticed a slight kink in the false keel. The keel has always done odd things but I thought it best to wait until everything was glued up first. It is a kink rather than a continuous bend, about 10 cm from the end.

What do you think? Should I attempt bring the keel back into line or is it not worth worrying about?

I wouldn't worry too much as it will be covered by the real keel in the end. Mine has a slight curve in it, and when its finished and displayed with all of the rigging and millions of other bits, it won't be noticed.

Blushing Hi don't know if its just the photo or not but have u noticed that at the very end of the bend in the keel the triangle(part of rib??)on the left hand side looks bigger than the right??

Hope u don't mind me pointing this out as it might help provide a solution to ure prob

Not at all, that's what I am asking for.

I think it is the light and poor photography, the ribs seem OK, in fact generally better than some others here it seems.

I am concerned about 2 things firstly, the look which Thomas suggests I needn't worry about but also any knock on effects.

Thanks guys.

I built the Hatchette Titanic and didn't notice the kink. When I planked her she looked like she had a broken nose. Might I suggest you PM Tomick for advice. Others have had the kink in the Victory but have corrected it before they inserted the ribs. I think some soaked the keel in the bath and some others ironed it. As a matter of interest have you glued the ribs in yet. Dunno what else to suggest to you mate. I wish you well with your build.

I would definitely try and straighten it, you will have problems with the planking. If it were mine then I would find a way to clamp it between 2 straight edges and soak or steam it.BigGrin

The real keel will follow the false keel and therefore will have a bend if it is left as is, the problem is compounded in having added the deck.
You could try applying steam to soften wood and the joints and then set into an aligned keel jig, leaving it in situ whilst planking.

Jig and clamps set up and the kettle is on, useful for making a cup of tea while you're doing this.

Not sure I'll be able to do the planing like this though, as the ship is on it's side.

Thanks guys.

Well what can I say? 40 minutes over the kettle with a couple of clamps and she's back to normal. I can correct again if the planking pulls it off.

This forum is amazing - problem identified, solution provided and fixed all in a couple of hours, thanks all.

Unfortunately I now have to leave it for a couple of months as I travel back to the UK until January. Really looking forward to planking it then and you guys can make all the mistake in the meantime.

If possible I would leave it clamped for a bit longer, wood has a nasty habit of twisting back.BigGrin
