Hi All
I have not posted for some time as all my queries have been asked and answered in the forum, and as This is my first build I have no pratical advice of offer, but I am still around and enjoying the project a great deal. I have finished the two gun decks and about to start on the barrels. I plan to paint my model and I was wondering how to finish the barrels. Are you folks going to leave the barrels unfinished or maybe varnish or even paint, which would be more authentic? I also wanted to say a big thank you to all the experts whose advice has been incredible, I could not have got this far without your help.
Good luck to you all JAW

Good luck to you all JAW I agree whole heartily with the above comments, this forum is the Bees Knees. I still managed to make a few minor newbie errors but decided to undo and correct now rather than later when things would be more difficult. The most difficult part for me was fairing the hull, as checking the line with the supplied strip did not give a true visual reading as it was not long enough so I purchased strips of thin timber from the local model shop and that made it a lot easier. Have spent some hours building up the ribs and reshaping to get back to the correct shape and reducing the infamous rib 15 by about 2mm. Planking now complete up to row 10 and looks OK,will have to go with row 12 around the bow as I opted to chamfer most of the bow planks as they were fitted so that they adopted the natural lie rather than allow them to rise at the front.A tip I picked up from the forum some time ago and actually remembered. Mr Ts build instructions are superb, and I use both the magazine and the official build in tandem as I have converted the magazine instructions to PDF and copied Mr Ts instructions to word. Both can be shown together on my screen and can be cross referenced to make sure I am on the right track. Many moons ago I posted pictures of my dingy build and was appalled at how bad it looked so that has been rectified and is now looking a lot better than it did. I will post some updated pictures in the not to distant future. Happy building to you all. CMB

There was a great post put up about finishing the barrels, think it was by Lonestar, just tried to find it but couldn't.
Worth having a look though as he did an excellent job and provided some great pics.

If you look at my pics in 'perfecting the barrels' you will see I painted mine matt earth and washed them in raw umber but that is my solution not 'the solution it is what ever works for you. Jase “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Hi everyone,
I suppose the finish for your barrels depends on personal preference really - mine have a natural finish after being very lightly stained with Victorian pine, and the binding is made from waxed black thread.
I did like the idea of dremmeling the lid into the top though, might have to have a go at that myself!
Regards, Tom

Great looking barrels Paul. If your partying I will pop round but I must tell you as a true Scot I'm more interested in the fine single malt than the barrels! Pam's shipyard is closed for now no more room!

Thanks Guys,
One again You all come up trumps, you have certainly given me some food for thought. I like the idea of the oak staining and adding the planking details I think I will give it a go, wish me luck. I got a little behind but I am starting to catch up, I have finished the second deck and I am really pleased with the results. I will be spending the next few days sanding feeling quite nervous about that but I plan to take it very slowly.
Thanks again JAW

Thanks again JAW I'm sorry sweetheart I thought this was Pauls thread. didnt mean to highjack it but it was the fine single malt that did it for me. My apologies! Pam's shipyard is closed for now no more room!
