Some of you may have read I sunk my HMS Hood build due to several complications, so what's more logical than to fill the empty spot in my shipyard with the Bismarck? Nothing, so that's exactly what I'll be doing. Another ebay find, this is a 140 issue partwork by Hachette building up into an Amati-designed 1:200 scale model of KMS Bismarck. The model is able to be built RC capable, which I won't be doing, because I have nowhere to run it. This is the original 2006 release, not the later UK release, so I'm sure we'll be running into some interesting problems along the ride. There's several boatloads of upgrade sets available for this kit. I'm not sure which I'll be taking yet, I'll have a look around in the next few days. Goralskis Top Drawings and the Anatomy of a Ship book are on their way. Issue 1 We receive the middle bottom of the hull, two ribs with support brackets and their deck beams all laser cut from birch wood. First impressions of these 10 year old pieces of wood: Looking way better then what led to the end of the Hood build. The previous owner took great care of these.  Poor widdle baby looks so tiny

Good luck with this one. Its a great model so hope the build goes well for you. When this collection was running in the UK there was an online build which is still available to view. I adoooore Marks week-by-week build reports. They're a big reason why I tend to choose that same format too. It's a shame he doesn't really have the time to do them anymore.

Nice start and shes a nice ship. I still have the Trumpeter 1/200 kit in my stash with the MK1 and Eduard etch sets [Apart from the crew figures set] must get round to building the beast soon Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Phase 2  The middle hull segment is largely completed with three new ribs, support brackets, two side beams and two deck beams I had a think about camouflage and decided I will not be going the obvious route of Baltic or semi-Baltic Camouflage. Everyone does that and frankly it's a bit boring seeing every Bismarck sport the same dress she wore for two months tops. Instead I'll be going for a "Last days of the Bismarck" approach which is largely the uniform grey she wore during most of her life with some minor differences. This has the added benefit of being able to omit the swastikas, I wouldn't really feel comfortable with those anyway.

Michael Sounds like a really good choice for your paint finish and it will be unique because as you say everyone does the iconic stripes version. I think your choice will give the model the deserved powerful look that it deserves. Glad its all going well so far. Happy Modelling

Issue 3  *click me for an audio experience of this update* So yeah, banana boat potential. We receive a keel segment for the stern of the boat, a support bracket, the three ribs for the segment and a deck beam. The connection between the two keel segments has so much play, if you were only following the instructions you would build a Schlachtschiff Bananamark right at this point. In fact, just for fun I put both parts together "by eye and fit", then checked versus my center lines and the sternmost end would veer out of line by a good 3-4 mm. While this would make the build more interesting, I kinda lack the courage to do a DaDokta and saw the whole thing apart later just to correct it. Seriously, if you don't know what I'm talking about check out DaDoktas U96 build. The man has nerves of steel. So no funny banana shenanigans here yet, plenty of opportunity for more. Also tried out a tip I saw recently and used the backing paper of self-adhesive printer labels instead of saran wrap to protect my building board against glue while putting the segments together. It's a world of difference. I'll only ever use this in the future.

Phase 4  The hull bottom is extended on the bow side, the ribs of last issue are strengthened with side beams and the first part of the detachable rib structure is built. Again extending the hull bottom has severe potential to go wrong with the connection having even more play then the astern one.

Issue 5  With three new ribs and two side beams the internal structure of the middle ship is largely completed as is the accompanying detachable deck structure.

Coming along nicely Greyhawk. I was tempted to get one of these. Did look on ebay while back but gave up and spent money on Trumpeter 1:200 Iowa and upgrades. Keep up your excellent work mate. On the bench 1/350 Revell Tirpitz Platinum Edition (Pontos PE and Wooden deck) plus extra Eduard PE set and extra MK1 door sets.
