Welcome to a new buildBigGrin

This is the Amati kit of the American gunboat Arrow. This will be a straight box build and you can see a review of this kit by following the link below.

So on with the buildCool Drool
The build sequence is different than anything i have done before as the ribs are mounted on a beam that forms the top deck before the keel is fitted. 5mm holes need to be drilled through at an angle to allow for the two masts as a first job, the kit provides a jig to aid getting the angle correct.

Rib positions are marked out using the plans along with a centre line to ensure correct rib alignment, i also used the keel strip to make sure everything was correctly in place.

The lower false decks are then fitted seating on top of the ribs. The bow and stern formers are also fitted, these are identical at both ends.

The visible areas of the deck are then planked, sanded and sealed with a matt varnish.

The rib extensions then have to be marked out and carefully positioned allowing some overhang at the bow and stern or ensuring the rib extension is in correct alignment with the lower rib ready for later fearing.

This is a cool looking boat Jase, I'm sure based on your previous boat builds this is going to turn out rather nicely indeed Cool

How many builds is that now on the go?

Rather like the look of this one myself so may have to go searching Blink

Would you say from a planking point of view it looks like a good starters model? From what i can see the hull is shallow and looks like planking it should be a lot easier that the hull shapes of different craft.
Happy Modelling

I would class this kit as intermediate. the hull shape is quite simple for planking but the instructions, although very detailed to assume some previous experience. Fairing the hull and the way the ribs are constructed is a little more challenging than most contemporary kit releases where the build is much more de-skilled. You might be better with one of the Calder craft scooters as a first build where the instructions are much more detailed.

the remaining rib extensions have been fitted, this is followed by the rowers foot stools. my kit was a little short of the dowel needed to make all the legs so I had to sand rod out of some 2 x 2mm box from my stock. Building the foot stools is likely the most tedious task within the build.

With the stools fitted the 5 pieces of false deck can be installed. the two mast holes need to be marked out and drilled through on the centre section.

The top deck can then be planked. I have to say the quality of the wood is very good indeed.

The kit comes with a display stand in the form of a slip. I decided this was a good point to knock this together. i will stain it oak.

Thats it for now

Nice kit and like the idea of a slip instead of the conventional wood or brass pillars on a plinth.

Look forward to the next update.

Thanks for the update. Was looking to find a kit that my nephew might like (he is 17) and wanted to try and get him something that looks good as well as being fairly easy.

Thanks all for looking in. I agree the slip is simple but effective as a display stand.

The hull has now been faired, not much shaping needed only really at the bow and the stern as sh essentially has a flat hull. Making sure you have the false decks sanded down to the false ribs is necessary also. The instructions for fairing the hull amount to one paragraph which also includes all the instructions for two layers of planking, not a beginners kit!

The first half of the boat has been planked, given an initial sand, filled and a second sanding underway. no nails are provided with the kit but you do have to be carful as the false ribs supporting the upper deck do not have the strength in the joints to take the force of nailing. clamping is problematic with all the foot rests in place so I needed up using a combination of pins and rubber bands for the wale and first two planks.

The top deck has also been sanded and shaped.
