13th February 1945, 1400 RAF and 450 US Airforce planes conducted 3 bombing waves over the city of Dresden in 14 hours, The city was devastated. 3,900 tons of explosives and incendiaries reduced much of the city to smouldering rubble killing up to 135,000 people.

Cannot imagine what those 14 hours would have been like for the population at the time....

I live in Darmstadt, where a similar raid happened on September 11, 1944.

When things where done, one single building in the entire city survived. Everything else was reduced to ashes and ruins. My father tells stories how he played in the ruins as a kid. By now the entire city has been rebuild, again with one single ruin left as remembrance.

Luise's Square, the citys central plaza after the raid. I went shopping for an iron there earlier today.

The Golden Crown, the only building to survive the devastation. To get a bit of perspective, notice how this building is sitting noticably lower than the surrounding streets? It's the only building that's still on the original level of the city. Everything else is built up on the ruins, which is why the rest of the city is higher.

The City Chapel, the only ruin left today as a memorial

Darmstadt, ruined in 1944 and now a beautiful place once again. I lived in Germany for some 18 years and have to say I loved every single minute I was there. Spent most of my time in the northern part of the country in and around Dusseldorf.... Simply a stunning country to see and live in..... Very fond memories of my time there....
